A tragic incident occurred in South Africa, a country notorious for high rates of violent crimes such as murder and robbery where a Korean YouTuber fell victim to taxi robbery. What’s more shocking is that the YouTuber encountered taxi robbers twice in a single day and was indiscriminately assaulted causing chills among netizens.

Recently, a video titled “I was beaten for two hours in South Africa” was posted on the travel YouTuber, Zero Sugar’s channel, startling the netizens.

The video begins with the YouTuber showing a bruised eye.

He explains, “I was robbed twice by taxi robbers. They took everything from my cell phone (iPhone 13 Pro), credit card, Apple Watch, jacket, ring, to shoes,” adding, “I’m just glad I could come back alive,” trailing off at the end.

Here’s what happened.

After having a glass of wine at a bar in his hostel, the YouTuber didn’t want to just go back. Wanting to film a video of himself singing, he found a pub (relatively safer) where mostly white people go. He went there to sing and film.

While trying to return to his hostel and having difficulty getting an Uber, he was loitering on the street.

A white man approached him amiably and offered him a ride if they were going in the same direction. When the white man mentioned the exact name of the hostel where the YouTuber was staying, he didn’t suspect anything.

As soon as the YouTuber got in the car, four black men followed and began to assault him indiscriminately. The YouTuber tried to fight back but his hand got torn and his cell phone and credit card were stolen. They then dumped him on a field and fled.

But the misfortune didn’t end there.

As the YouTuber was walking to catch a taxi to the city a car stopped in front of him. The driver welcomed him with open arms, urging him to get in.

When the still dazed YouTuber got in the car, he found other passengers hiding. He was beaten even harder there for two hours. They took his Apple Watch, ring, upper clothes, jacket, hat, and even his shoes.

Upon finally arriving at his hostel, the YouTuber’s priority was to block his credit card. He sent out an SOS to a domestic online community, and thankfully, he was able to resolve the issue with the help of an acquaintance.

The YouTuber said, “Locals told me that I should never have fought back, and when I asked what they meant, they said that these guys carry knives and guns. I could have been killed. The fact that I survived twice is really lucky.”

He sighed and said, “How can I travel to India (my next destination) without a cell phone and credit card,” and added, “I’m not in the mood to laugh. I think I broke a rib.”

South Africa, the host country of the 2010 World Cup, is one of the countries with the highest violent crime rates in the world, with about 20,000 out of a population of 60 million being killed each year. In the first quarter of last year, there were 6,289 murder victims in South Africa. The number of sexual assault victims during the same period exceeded 10,000.
