A man seen rummaging through garbage bins for food turned out to be a secret millionaire who owns nine houses, sparking public interest.
The UK’s renowned media outlet, The Sun, shed light on the story of an 80-year-old man from Germany.
Heinz B, aged 80, has lived a frugal life since his earliest days.
To sustain his life, he scavenges food from garbage bins and collects items others have discarded on the street.
However, it was revealed in 2021 that Heinz owns seven houses and two apartments, and he even withdrew 700,000 euros (approximately $788,000) in cash to purchase his tenth house.
Heinz B explained his path to wealth: “I live frugally. That’s how I was raised.”
Heinz B was an electrical engineer and a high-ranking official in a telecommunications office. He receives a pension of 3,600 euros (approximately $4,056) and an additional pension of 156 (approximately $176).
In reality, his only luxuries were an internet connection and a laptop. He said he doesn’t want a cell phone, stating, “I think it would cost an extra 10 euros a month if I lived that way.”
Heinz B saves the most on food, stating, “I don’t even spend 5 euros a month on food. I buy frying oil only when I run out of it.”
He continued, “I mostly find food in the trash. People waste a lot. They throw away so much that an entire family could eat.”
Heinz B receives assistance from neighbors who contribute discarded and expired food items. In return, he shares well-preserved items salvaged from the pile of garbage in his garden.
When queried about his investment choices, Heinz highlights, “Real estate is a hedge against inflation. Buying gold nuggets is also a good choice.”
When asked about his “inheritance plans,” Heinz B said, “I have no idea. I have a few distant cousins who can’t afford to pay inheritance tax,” adding, “I might give the house to the tenants.”
