Shocking details have emerged regarding the tragic accident involving a woman in her 50s falling to her death while bungee jumping at the Starfield in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, on the 26th.
According to reports from JTBC News and other media channels on the 27th, it was confirmed that the necessary safety devices were insufficient at the time of the accident, and the safety guard on duty was a part-timer who had been working for only two weeks.
Media sources reported that the indoor bungee jumping facility where a woman in her 50s fell to her death lacked mats or a safety net to cushion the fall.
Moreover, it has been reported that the safety ring connecting the woman’s body to the bungee cord was unfastened at the time of the accident. A police officer told the media, “It’s true that the ring was not fastened.”
Most importantly, the safety guard who was responsible for checking the ring and ensuring safety was a part-timer in his 20s who had only been working for two weeks. It was revealed that he had no safety-related qualifications or skills.
The part-timer reportedly admitted during the police investigation that he “forgot to fasten the ring by mistake.”
In fact, media reported that some customers shared their experiences around the time of the accident, saying, “It looked dangerous,” and “When I asked if it was safe, the part-timer looked at me weird.”
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Criminal Investigation Team of the Southern Gyeonggi Police Agency charged the safety guard, a man in his 20s identified as Mr. A, with professional negligence resulting in death, without detention. He is suspected of neglecting safety measures at the time of the accident.
Regarding the matter, the police are examining whether this accident qualifies as a serious civil disaster.
Smob, located at Starfield Anseong and where the accident took place, is closing temporarily.
Netizens who heard the news responded with comments such as, “It’s a matter of life and death, how could they be so careless?” “Who’s going to compensate for this? This is tragic,” “How can there be no professional safety guard?” and “The more I think about it, the more heartbreaking it is.”
