The parents of six-week-old twin infants were charged for allegedly starving and beating their children to death.
On April 19, Angelina Belinda Calderon (21) and Fernando Vega (21) were arrested on charges of child abuse leading to the deaths of their six-week-old twin daughters.
On October 4, 2023, Houston Police responded to a call from Vega, who reported, “I came home after dropping my wife off at work, and the twins weren’t breathing.”
Upon arrival, the police found the deceased infants on the sofa with discolored skin and multiple bruises. One of the children was also found with broken bones.
Vega, the father who called, claimed that “the twins were fussy all night, so I laid them in their crib,” Calderon, the mother, stated, “I didn’t wake them up in the morning because I had to go to work.”
The autopsy revealed that the infants died from multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma. The pathologist in charge stated, “Both twins were in a state of malnutrition; one showed evidence of acute brain hemorrhage, and the other had brain and spinal cord hemorrhages suggesting recent trauma.”
The district attorney stated, “The deceased children were six weeks old, and it appears that both had been consistently injured over time.” He added, “As their caregivers, they should have been aware of malnutrition and the physical injuries.”
Vega’s lawyer, Mario Madrid, said, “Vega seemed to be in shock. He was respectful in court but also seemed scared about his charges.”
A media outlet reported that Calderon, the mother, became emotional in court, stating, “You were the last person with my children when they died. You’re making me look like the villain. I was at work when they died.”
Calderon’s mother-in-law told a local news station, “Both should take responsibility for their actions.”
The couple is currently incarcerated at Harris County Jail, charged with physical assault towards a minor.
The court hearing for Vega, the father, is scheduled for May 29, while Calderon, the mother, is due in court this Friday.
