Recently, there has been increasing buzz about the claim that honey eye drops can cure eye infections.
The New York Post reported that TikTok users claim that Jimerito honey eye drops can eliminate floaters and even treat conditions like glaucoma and cataracts.
According to these claims, honey contains a glucose molecule called trehalose, which helps cells retain moisture and alleviates dry eye symptoms.
Proponents highlight that honey contains flavonoids, antioxidants that protect the eyes, and various amino acids that aid in repairing damaged eye tissues.
However, many people trying this treatment have reported experiencing painful reactions.
One TikTok user shared a video showing themselves in distress, claiming that the treatment can “clear vision, broaden sight, and even cure tinnitus.”
Ophthalmologists, however, are skeptical. They suggest using commercially available honey eye drops by dissolving a drop in warm water and using it as an eye wash.
Optometrist Bryony Allen explained to the Daily Mail that conditions like floaters, glaucoma, and cataracts affect the inside of the eye, with glaucoma requiring specific medications to lower intraocular pressure. She noted that although some research has looked into using honey’s anti-inflammatory properties to treat dry eye, there is no solid evidence supporting its effectiveness, and it could potentially cause more harm.
“If you have eye problems, it’s better to consult a doctor rather than relying on home remedies,” she said.
