Taiwanese media outlet CTWANT reported on a couple who contracted pubic lice from a towel at a hotel after their stay.
Urologist Guo Fangyu shared this story on social media and provided preventive tips to avoid pubic lice.
The couple stayed at a small hotel where the towels weren’t exactly fresh. Since they hadn’t packed extras, they decided to use what was available, only to later discover intense itching and tiny insects crawling in their pubic area. Yep, you guessed it—they had pubic lice.
While pubic lice are often spread through sexual contact, these pesky parasites can also lurk in hotel bedding and towels. They feed on human blood several times a day and typically cause itching within a week of exposure. It takes about two weeks for the lice to mature into adults but trust us fully. The symptoms will have you seeking help way before then!
So, what can you do to avoid this nightmare scenario? According to Guo Fangyu, the best way to protect yourself is to kill any potential viruses or parasites by washing and disinfecting items at high temperatures. He also advises against sharing personal belongings and stresses the importance of bringing hygiene products when traveling.
