According to a report from the Daily Mail last year, a 23-year-old woman from Newport, Wales, shared her shocking experience of severe hair loss after being infected with COVID-19 eight times. Lydia Moly first noticed her hair thinning while showering in November, starkly contrasting her usual long, thick brown hair. Over time, her hair became finer, and clumps began falling out whenever she brushed it after washing.
By January, Lydia discovered round patches of hair loss on her scalp. Upon seeking medical help, she was diagnosed with alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. While doctors attributed the hair loss to stress, Lydia expressed doubts, noting that she doesn’t get stressed easily. She suggested that it might be a long-term COVID symptom, given her repeated infections.
“I think after having it so many times, my immune system has just been dampened and dampened,” Lydia explained. “I had COVID at the end of November for the eighth time, and then I started seeing my hair falling out after that.”
Although medical professionals acknowledged that long-term COVID could be a factor in her hair loss, they could not definitively link it to her alopecia. Within five months of her diagnosis, Lydia lost 80% of her hair and admitted she no longer recognized herself in the mirror.
Lydia, known for her love of selfies, started shying away from the camera and eventually chose to shave her head, donating her remaining hair. She shared that her confidence returned once she fully embraced being bald. “A full face of makeup with a bald head is a really good look on a woman, and it has made me feel even more feminine.”
