A 12-year-old girl from the UK who ate only French fries for years has lost her eyesight due to a severe vitamin A deficiency.
According to an online report from Sanook, the girl, who began eating only French fries at four, developed a strong preference for fast food and refused to eat vegetables or fruits. After eight years of this limited diet, she began experiencing troubling symptoms by the time she turned 12.
One day, the girl collapsed at home and lost consciousness. Her parents immediately rushed her to the hospital. Reflecting on the frightening moment, her parents recalled, “We tried to wake her up, but she didn’t respond at all.”
Fortunately, she received prompt emergency care, and her life was saved. However, the prolonged vitamin deficiency caused irreversible damage, and the girl lost her eyesight.
In a follow-up, the doctor explained, “The girl is severely deficient in vitamin A, but her weight is normal, and her overall health is stable.” The doctor also noted that she is suffering from Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), which causes individuals to limit their food intake or reject entire food categories.
The doctor added, “Eating the same food repeatedly can lead to serious health risks, including impaired vision and hearing. It’s crucial to maintain a balanced diet with a variety of nutrients.”
The girl’s parents, reflecting on the situation, expressed deep regret: “We should have paid more attention to what our child was eating. Maybe she wouldn’t have lost her eyesight if we had taken it more seriously.”
