This is because while Mexico has recently emerged as a staging ground for bypassed exports to the U.S., which has helped Beijing considerably, the U.S.-Mexico border is also a highly publicized conduit for illegal immigration of its own citizens to the U.S. Diplomatic sources in Beijing cited the 23rd as a distribution route for the drug fentanyl, which is plaguing the United States. The raw material for the drug, produced in China, enters the U.S. through Mexico. Moreover, the two countries have grown closer in recent years, with China actively utilizing Mexico as a staging ground for bypassing exports to the United States. As of last year, the value of Chinese goods exported to Mexico increased by a whopping 30 percent from the previous year. Industry insiders said that most Chinese goods are either further processed in factories across Mexico or "labeled" into finished products before being exported to the U.S. overland.
