India’s Military Modernization Efforts
Spending up to $100 Billion
Key Focus on Domestic Production of Tejas
India is an emerging power that is aggressively growing beyond its military interests focused on the U.S., Russia, and China. Not only has the number of military personnel increased, but the level of equipment has also significantly advanced compared to the past. India has ties to South Korea through the purchase of K-9 self-propelled guns. Considering that the countries bordering India are nuclear-armed Pakistan and China, it’s crucial not to forget that India’s military power cannot be weak.
Recently, India has announced that it is embarking on a full-fledged modernization of its military, shaking the military world in Asia. This includes the 100% domestic production of Tejas, its latest fighter jet. Let’s take a brief look at this today.
Domestic Production of Tejas Parts
Growing Confidence in the Indian Air Force
India is currently making efforts to indigenize all equipment used in its military, including tanks, submarines, and missiles, and notably, there is speculation that a significant emphasis will be placed on indigenizing components of the Tejas, especially its engines. Considering the engine supply issues that arose during the development of Tejas due to conflicts related to India’s nuclear possession with the UK, this attitude of India is well understandable.
Recently, India has shown significant confidence in Tejas. This confidence stems not only from the fighter jet’s development, which has had its share of challenges but also from the recent successful landing of the Air Force version of Tejas, not a carrier-based version, on the active Vikrant-class aircraft carrier. This indicates that Tejas is undoubtedly intended to serve as a primary fighter for both the Air Force and Navy.

India as a Key Partner in the Indo-Pacific
There are plenty of reasons for the Indian military to be confident. Pakistan, which used to be a major adversary, is currently in a catastrophic economic and political state and is unable to counter India. China, a border dispute country, is also unable to pay as much attention to India as before because it is confronting the U.S. over Taiwan.
In this situation, India, which is expected to play a significant role as a key partner of the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa against China, is anticipated to enhance its military power in the future further.
