Hyundai Motor Company made it to the ‘Top 10’ in UK car sales last year. The brand’s compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) model ‘Tucson,’ has been selling well, driving overall performance.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) on the 9th, Hyundai sold a total of 87,112 vehicles in the UK market last year, an increase of 8.32% from the previous year. The market share is 4.58% making it the 10th among local car brands.
The Tucson was primarily responsible for these results. Last year, 34,469 units of the Tucson were sold, making it the 6th best-selling car in the local market. The Tucson which ranked in the ‘Top 5’ best-selling cars with 18,678 units sold in the first half of the year, continued to be popular in the second half as well. The Tucson’s popularity is attributed to its luxurious interior and sharp, compact design.
The expansion of the electric vehicle model lineup also supported the increase in sales. Hyundai has been strengthening the local supply of its brand-exclusive electric vehicle models, the Ioniq 5 and 6. In addition, in July of last year, it launched the ‘All-New Kona Electric’ (2nd generation Kona EV) and the high-performance electric vehicle model ‘Ioniq 5 N’ based on the Ioniq 5.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen took the top spot in the UK market. Volkswagen’s market share was tallied at 8.52%. It was followed by △Ford (7.57%) in second place, △Audi (7.22%) in third, △BMW (5.87%) in fourth, and △Toyota (5.77%) in fifth. Kia took the sixth spot with 5.66%, followed by △Vauxhall (5.28%) in seventh, △Nissan (4.70%) in eighth, and △Mercedes-Benz (4.61%) in ninth place.
