An Apple Watch’s ability to detect a car crash and automatically contact emergency services is gaining widespread attention after a reported incident where it potentially saved a driver’s life.
According to CNN, on March 11, the Racine County Communication Center in Wisconsin received an emergency call from an Apple Watch on the morning of March 10.
The Apple Watch called 911 with a voice message saying, “The owner of the Apple Watch has been in a serious car accident and is unresponsive.”
Leveraging the location data automatically transmitted by the Apple Watch, firefighters swiftly located the crash site and promptly transported the injured driver to the hospital.
The scene showed significant damage, with one truck bearing the brunt of the impact. All airbags had been deployed, indicating the severity of the collision.
Ronald Molnar, the fire chief of Kansasville, stated, “We don’t know what the outcome would have been if the Apple Watch hadn’t contacted us, considering the accident occurred at a late hour.”
News of the Apple Watch’s life-saving potential in a car crash sparked diverse reactions from viewers. Some praised the technology, stating, “This feature seems great,” others desired further advancements, suggesting features like “blood alcohol concentration sensors” for drunk driving detection.
In a previous incident last December, an Apple Watch in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, reportedly triggered an emergency response after a car accident on a snowy road.
The Apple Watch supports a “collision detection feature” that automatically alerts authorities if the user does not respond 10 seconds after a collision.
