As the transition to electric power systems occurs, manufacturers convert their traditional combustion engines to electric ones. The design of electric vehicles is also a point of consideration. BMW is maintaining the design principles of its conventional combustion engines. On the other hand, Mercedes has introduced the EQ brand and applied a completely new design to its electric vehicles.
There has been a sharp conflict over the Mercedes EQ brand’s electric vehicles. There were high complaints that the design of electric cars is becoming unified with a future-oriented image. Consumers are highly interested in the design that will change enough for electric vehicles to replace traditional combustion engines. Among these, the electric concept car design that received favorable reviews is once again attracting attention.
The harmony of the sharp design of supercars and the design of electric vehicles
2018 Audi presented the PB18 e-Tron concept, a future electric supercar design. A proper balance was struck between the angular and sleek design of supercars and the future-oriented design of electric vehicles. The overall appearance resembles the mid-engine supercar R8. Race tracks and wind tunnels inspired the low and wide body.
Three electric motors in the center of the body, front axle, and rear axle produce a maximum output of 670 horsepower. It is equipped with a 95kWh battery pack, which aims to achieve a driving range of 498km (about 309.4 miles) on a single charge. The interior can move the driver’s seat to the center. This is possible because the steering wheel and pedals are not mechanically connected to the body through a by-wire design.

The second is Honda’s Urban EV, an electric vehicle with a retro design. It has a smooth front design with a grill shape. Round daytime running lights stand out on both sides. Honda’s new electric car logo is in the center. The rear features a rectangular tail lamp rounded off at the end.
Honda has mass-produced an electric car based on the Urban EV. The Honda E, which is produced and sold in Japan and other regions, is an example. The Honda E is a rear-wheel-drive electric vehicle that can travel up to 220km (about 136.7 miles) on a single charge. Although the driving range is somewhat lacking, it’s acceptable, considering it’s an urban electric vehicle. The problem was the high price. The Honda E was sold in the Japanese market for 4.95 million yen (about $44,500). There weren’t many consumers willing to spend this much money on a small electric car that could travel 220km, no matter how modern its specifications and design. The Honda E was discontinued in January of this year.
The retro design was modernly interpreted
The last is Peugeot’s e-Legend. Like Honda’s Urban EV, this concept car, which Peugeot unveiled in 2018, combines retro and futuristic designs. Modern design elements unique to e-Legend have also been added. The coupe-style sideline with a wide glass surface provides an impressive sense of openness.
The roofline that starts from the A-pillar, almost vertical, continues flatly and falls sharply from the C-pillar. The line of the trunk and the C-pillar is distinguished, maintaining the angular body. The angular design was also applied to the front. The parting line of the long bonnet protrudes sharply. The interior is composed of a retro vibe with wood and silk velvet materials, but it also creates a modern image with a 49-inch curved screen and an angular steering wheel.
