Top 5 Midsize SUVs as Voted by American Consumers: Genesis GV80 Climbs the Ranks
Midsize SUVs are especially beloved as family cars and highly appeal to American consumers who prefer larger vehicles. Consumer evaluations are drawing attention as SUV sales continue to rise in the U.S. market.
Consumer Reports, a highly respected U.S. consumer media outlet, has ranked midsize SUVs based on consumer responses. Factors such as reliability and maintenance costs determined the rankings. Here are the top 5 midsize SUVs as voted by American consumers.
5th Place: Mercedes-Benz GLE
Drawback: High Maintenance Costs
The Mercedes-Benz GLE came in fifth, ranking lower than the Genesis GV80, which took fourth place. According to new car quality data from U.S. market research firm J.D. Power, the GLE is known to have astronomical maintenance costs. For ten years, it costs about $14,738 to maintain. Additionally, there is a 42.69% chance of needing significant repairs.
RepairPal, a car price and repair information provider, gave the GLE a rating of one star out of five, indicating the lowest reliability score. The frequency and severity of repairs were also high. Despite this, the GLE received high scores for its excellent performance. It offers a range of powertrains in Korea, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid.
4th Place: Genesis GV80
3rd Place: BMW X5
The Genesis GV80 took fourth place, scoring higher than the Mercedes-Benz GLE. While detailed evaluations on annual maintenance costs and durability have not been conducted yet, it has gained high trust from American consumers. So far, it has been well-received in the U.S. for having virtually no defects, except for one recall due to loss of power. Despite its luxurious design elements, like the Crest Grill and Quad Lamps, its relatively low price was a significant factor in its high rating.
The BMW X5 came in third. Its high-performance version, the M5 50i XDrive, is equipped with a V8 engine, a rare high-performance V8 engine in an SUV. This rare engine earned high consumer ratings. While consumer reliability was excellent, there was a 54.61% chance of needing significant repairs over ten years. Problems mainly occurred in the engine and cooling systems, and the high repair costs associated with a premium SUV were noted as a disadvantage.
2nd Place: Lincoln Nautilus
1st Place: Lexus GX
The Lincoln Nautilus came in second, earning high ratings for its comfortable ride, luxurious interior, and 48-inch touchscreen entertainment options. It outperformed other Ford models with an 87 out of 100 reliability score. It is equipped with a 2.0 4-cylinder gasoline engine that produces a maximum output of 252 horsepower and a maximum torque of 38 kgf.m.
The Lexus GX took the top spot. Like the LX, it uses the TNGA-F platform and features enhanced body rigidity with a frame body. It also boasts excellent on- and off-road driving capabilities with its lightweight body. The 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo engine installed in the GX delivers a maximum output of 349 horsepower and a maximum torque of 66.2 kgf.m. With a reliability score of 89, the GX received the highest ratings from American consumers regarding durability and performance.
