Amid the global boom of electric Chinese cars, Xiaomi’s SU7 is attracting much attention. The first electric car from Xiaomi, SU7, with its groundbreaking price and sleek design, has secured over 100,000 reservations to date.
Despite various issues, such as brake design flaws, coming to light, its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning. What if a wagon version was added to the sedan model SU7? Realistic renderings have appeared, attracting the attention of netizens.
Realistic Rendering Appears
Why Does it Feel Familiar?
The Instagram digital creator (sugardesign_1) posted a rendering of the Xiaomi SU7 Touring on the 15th. The front and the side up to the A~B pillars retain the original design, but the unique roof line of the wagon starts from the second-row doors and blends naturally. The sedan does not have a roof rail, which has been added along with an additional cargo box.
While it’s not a direct competitor, the exterior of the SU7 incorporates some aspects of the Porsche Taycan. The imaginary wagon model reminds one of the Porsche Taycan Turismo. The voluminous fender and the rear quarter glass that seems to climb it give a sporty image, and the top of the DLO line that gets lower as it goes back emphasizes speed.
No Plans for a Wagon, but
The SUV Model is Under Development
The rear end shows more differences from the sedan. The tail lamps and bumper are reused, and the tailgate also has a similar crease at the top of the lamp as the sedan model. The moderately thick D pillar, the angle of the rear glass that leans back, and the spoiler decorating the top also catch the eye. However, since it’s a virtual rendering, one must consider that the tread is wider than the actual vehicle, and the ground clearance is lower.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi is also developing the SU8, a crossover electric vehicle following the SU7. The new car is known to share the Modena platform, battery, and electric motor of the SU7. According to foreign media, considering the increased weight due to the larger body, the SU8 may also have a range extender option. The unveiling of the Xiaomi SU8 is expected in the second half of this year.
The Price Seems Too Good to Be True
Actually Running at a Loss
The SU7 is being sold at a groundbreaking price starting at $35,000. There are reactions like, “Do they make any profit selling it at this price?” In reality, Xiaomi is running at a loss regarding SU7 sales. Citigroup estimated that Xiaomi loses an average of $1,140 per SU7 sold. Nevertheless, Xiaomi is reportedly capable of enduring the losses from electric car sales for over five years.
