Heavy rain hits Dubai
What is the fate of the Porsche Taycan?
There are also cases of mixed joy and sorrow
In the early morning of April 16 (local time), heavy rain fell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). On this day alone, 160 mm (6.3 inches) of rain fell, close to two years’ worth of rainfall in Dubai, which has a desert climate.
Due to the abnormal weather, many parts of the city, including the airport, were flooded, and many people were trapped in their homes and roads. Meanwhile, a video showed a Porsche electric vehicle, the Taycan, escaping safely from a flooded road.
Despite being afloat in the water
It managed to escape onto the road
In a video posted on social media such as Instagram on April 17, the Taycan seemed to have already missed all opportunities. The water was so deep that the wheels could not be seen, and at some point, the Taycan vehicle completely lost traction and appeared to float in the water. However, even when it was off the ground, it did not stop. It continued straight ahead little by little, eventually entering an uphill section and escaping safely from the flooded road.
Rainwater filled the luxury vehicles
However, there are also cases where luck did not follow. On the same day, a Land Rover Range Rover owner was devastated and shared a video of his vehicle being filled with water. As the instrument panel and center display were turned off, everything from the powertrain to the electronic system appeared flooded. The Range Rover in question is a fourth-generation model produced between 2012 and 2021, and it boasts wading performance that allows it to cross water 900 mm ( 2. 95 feet ) deep.
However, the water appears to have been deeper than that. Considering the model’s overall height (1,869 mm or 6.13 feet ) and the water filling up to the top of the door trim, the water depth was well over 1 meter (3.28 feet).
What do you do if the vehicle is flooded?
At this time, the driver must escape
If you encounter this flooding situation, you should not let down your guard, such as taking a video like in the case above. This is because it is impossible to know how high the water will rise during heavy rain. If the water rises to the level of the vehicle’s bumper, you must drive slowly and maintain a low gear without turning off the engine. The important thing now is not to take your foot off the accelerator pedal. When you step on the brakes or shift gears to a higher gear, water may fill the engine and stall.
However, if the water rises to the height of the car’s wheels, you should evacuate immediately rather than leave your vehicle behind. If the water level exceeds that, it becomes difficult to open the door due to water pressure. In this case, you must open the window or sunroof and, if that is not possible, pull out the headrest and break both corners to escape. Even if this fails, there is hope. Before water fills the vehicle, take a deep breath and wait until completely submerged. When the vehicle is filled with water, the pressure inside and outside becomes equal, allowing you to open the door and escape.
