High-Performance Electric Cars by AMG
A Closer Look at AMG’s Vision Concept Car
Development of SUV Models Underway
Mercedes-Benz, a renowned German car brand synonymous with luxury imports, unveiled its Vision AMG concept car in 2022, presenting the future of high-performance electric vehicles. This concept car, developed in-house by AMG, is expected to launch its production model by 2025. If launched without any issues, this will be AMG’s first electric car.
Mercedes-Benz is reportedly developing an SUV based on the Vision AMG production model. This high-performance electric SUV, expected to be unveiled in 2026, will be the focus of our discussion in this article.
The Vision AMG Concept Car is set to be launched as a four-door coupe
First, let’s look at the Vision AMG concept car. This sleek 4-door coupe-model car sports an exterior that could easily be mistaken for a supercar. The front features a unique AMG grille and daytime running lights across the top. The sides showcase a sleek roofline and 22-inch wheels. The rear is equipped with tail lights at the end of the body, acting as spoilers, and an LED ring reminiscent of a muffler on the lower diffuser.
The car employs an EA platform optimized for high-performance electric vehicles, currently under development. The powertrain is equipped with a dual motor that generates over 1,000 horsepower. The car uses a new battery developed in collaboration with Sila Nanotechnologies in the U.S., which has 20–40% higher capacity than typical electric car batteries. The production model is slated for a 2025 release and is expected to be the successor to the discontinued CLS model.
Following the 4-door coupe, an SUV model is also set for release
Recently, it was revealed that an SUV is also being developed based on the concept car’s production model. While no specific details have been released, it is expected to share a family look with the Vision AMG production model and use the same platform and powertrain.
The size of the vehicle is reportedly similar to the current midsize GLE model. If launched, it would be a strong competitor for the BMW XM despite having a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The launch is scheduled for 2026.
Prototypes of the 4-door coupe model have already been spotted
Prototypes of the 4-door coupe model have already been spotted. The disappointing aspect is that while the coupe has a sleek roofline, it lacks the sleekness of the concept car. Looking at the overall silhouette of the vehicle, it bears a striking resemblance to the currently marketed AMG GT 4-door model.
Upon inspection of the prototype test car, the front features a headlamp that doesn’t differ much from regular vehicles. The rear has a lamp miming the three LED rings on the concept car’s diffuser.
