Volvo EX30 Software Bug Triggers Massive Recall: What You Need to Know

newautopost Views

News of continuing defects
Volvo embroiled in quality controversy
What are the prospects for EX30?

Volvo EX30

Founded in 1927, Volvo has nearly a century of history. The brand is regarded as a reliable representative of European automotive quality and has successfully targeted the luxury imported vehicle market. Meanwhile, Volvo’s ownership has also been a topic of interest. The company experienced a significant national shift over 20 years, from being part of Ford to its acquisition by China’s Geely.

In particular, since Geely acquired Volvo, Volvo has tried to eliminate the stigma of being a Chinese vehicle. Thanks to Geely, it could be revived successfully, but its premium image began to show cracks due to the injection of Chinese capital and subsequent production in China. Recently, news of defects in the entry-level electric vehicle EX30 has been receiving attention.

Software bug occurs in a massive 70,000 vehicles

The EX30, known for its reasonable price, luxurious design, and competitive performance, garnered immediate praise following its launch in 2023. Shortly after, the Kia EV3, a South Korean-made electric vehicle in the same category, was introduced, sparking predictions of fierce competition between the two models and drawing significant attention. However, recent news has surfaced that all units of the EX30 will be recalled due to a software glitch.

A bug in which the central screen’s digital speedometer switches to test mode when the vehicle is turned on is pointed out as a problem. 71,956 vehicles have been identified as being subject to recall. Volvo officials have reassured consumers that wireless software updates can resolve the problem inexpensively and effortlessly.

This is not the first time the EX90 launch has been delayed

Previously, Volvo delayed the launch of the EX90 by more than six months due to software problems, so this problem is a major drawback. For the EX90, a large electric SUV, Volvo finally began production in early June 2024 after resolving software issues related to driver assistance systems. Additionally, delivery of the EX30 was briefly delayed in early 2024 due to software issues.

The EX30 was popular among buyers who highly valued its clean design, reasonable price, and top-level power performance.

Fall of high expectations
Even the production location changes?

Despite numerous favorable reviews, overly high expectations led to disappointment. Volvo, owned by Geely, manufactures the EX30 in China but plans to shift some production to Belgium. This move aims to avoid tariffs that European Union regulators are expected to impose on Chinese-made cars this week. The EX30, which has not yet been shipped to countries outside of Europe, is currently the subject of much attention and controversy.
