There is a saying that when signing up for car insurance, drivers should always get the maximum property limit. Even if drivers are confident in driving safely, if drivers make a mistake and cause an accident, the extent of the damage cannot be predicted. In particular, the insurance property limit may determine the future if an accident involves expensive vehicles such as supercars.
Recently, a case of such a supercar accident occurred in South Korea, heating the online community. When the accident video was just uploaded, public opinion was inclined towards the possibility of negligence on the part of the supercar driver, but soon after, the twist was revealed.
Vehicles tangled at an intersection
Was the Corvette owner at fault?
On June 19, 2024, a post titled Yesterday’s Geoje traffic accident was posted on social media such as Instagram. A video of the accident scene, known as an intersection in Geoje-dong, Busan, showed two vehicles tangled together. In front of the restaurant near the corner of the intersection, a gray Chevrolet Trax vehicle was lifted as if it had been hit on the side. And below, the red Corvette vehicle that crashed into the vehicle was stopped with its emergency lights on.
When the video was uploaded, there was no specific explanation of the accident, but full of speculations. A nearby resident claimed the Corvette vehicle was “notorious for reckless driving in the neighborhood.” Another seemed to be weighing the possibility of Corvette’s negligence, saying, “I knew it would end up like this after driving like that on the highway.”
Accident while making an unprotected left turn
Trax expected to be 90% at fault
But soon after, the situation took a turn. The comment was made directly by a person believed to be the owner of the Corvette. He said, “The Trax vehicle had an accident while making an unprotected left turn,” and “It was my fault for not driving defensively.” He added, “I received an answer from the insurance company that the Trax driver was expected to be at fault 90% of the time.”
Some countered that it was not an unprotected left turn accident but that the location where it stopped was close to the corner of the intersection. They also said that the Corvette driver was likely speeding due to the damaged condition of the two vehicles and the fact that they even hit a utility pole. If the Trax driver is mostly at fault, the amount of compensation is likely to be significant.
What’s the price of the vehicle involved?
Meanwhile, since the Chevrolet Corvette is a rare vehicle in South Korea, there is keen interest in the model of the vehicle involved in the accident. The vehicle in the video is the 8th generation (C8) Corvette, released in 2019, and has not yet been launched in South Korea. In the US, it starts at $68,300. This vehicle is equipped with a 6.2L V8 gasoline naturally aspirated engine and produces a maximum output of 497 horsepower and a maximum torque of 64.2 kgf.m based on the base model. In addition, it delivers high performance with acceleration from 0 to 97 km/h (60 mph) in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 312 km/h (194 mph).
