BMW’s new M5 finally revealed
Equipped with plug-in hybrid
Came back with the best performance
BMW unveiled the full change model (redesigned model) M5 and some specifications. The M5 is a high-performance model of the 5 series and has powerful performance even within the M brand. However, this new M5 is characterized by being equipped with a plug-in hybrid system.
Although the plug-in hybrid system achieved efficiency and performance, the weight increased significantly compared to the previous model. While concerns are being raised that the high weight may limit driving texture and agile movement when driving in high-performance areas, the specifications of the new M5 are attracting attention.
Generating a total output of 727 horsepower
Weight increased to 2,445 kg (5,390 pounds)
A 4.4-liter V8 turbo engine is installed in the powertrain case, producing 585 horsepower with the engine alone. The system outputs 727 horsepower and a maximum torque of 102 kgf.m when the electric motor is added. An 8-speed automatic transmission is engaged, and four-wheel drive is applied as standard. The electric mode driving range is expected to be approximately 40 km (25 miles) through a 14.8 kWh battery.
However, the weight increased as the electric motor and battery were added. While the previous M5 weighed 1,971 kg (4,345 pounds), the new M5 weighed 2,445 kg (5,390 pounds). This is a 24% increase in weight compared to the previous model. Although the power level has improved, the increased weight has slowed it.
Applied BMW’s Advanced Technology
Equipped with appropriate driving force distribution
The new M5’s 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time is approximately 3.4 seconds. Although the increased weight may affect cornering, the new M5 balances the heavy body during cornering through a stable distribution of driving force. The Active M Differential, which adjusts the distribution of left and right driving force depending on the driving situation, minimizes the understeering phenomenon that can occur during cornering.
The double wishbone suspension at the front wheel, suspension guide arm, camber control arm, and engine transmission mount at the rear wheel were made of lightweight aluminum. A boost control system was applied here to make output control more intuitive. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but when selecting the M Driver Package, it can be increased to approximately 305 km/h (190 mph).
High-performance Emphasized Exterior Design
Price Starts from $119,500
In terms of exterior design, the iconic glow grill was installed. The closed grille emphasizes the image of BMW’s electric model. The bumper design has been changed to be more angular and voluminous than the base 5 Series. The trapezoidal bumper grill and angled air duct at the bottom of the front emphasize the high-performance image. The rear part has an M rear spoiler and a round dual muffler tip made of black chrome.
The interior has an M panoramic curved display connecting a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment display. In addition, a head-up display, heated seats, surround system, and panoramic sunroof are provided. The M5 full-change model is scheduled to be produced in Germany in July 2024 and is priced at $119,500.
