Ford Capri Reemerges as an Electric Vehicle
Eye-catching Coupe SUV Design
What about performance and launch date?
The Ford Capri name has graced a variety of models, ranging from two-door coupes to convertibles. Ford recently introduced a new vehicle under the Capri name. Officially unveiled on July 11, the new Ford Capri captured attention as a coupe-style SUV.
Unlike typical American vehicles, characterized by roughness, the neatly trimmed exterior and interior layout are expected to go beyond the US market. Let’s look at its performance and whether it will likely be launched.
Previously launched Capri design applied
Based on Volkswagen MEB Platform EV
The newly unveiled Ford Capri will be produced based on the same MEB platform as the Explorer Electric and Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 sold in Europe. Therefore, the wheelbase is also 2,770 mm (109 inches). The Explorer Electric features the appearance of a traditional SUV, but the Capri is a coupe-type SUV, showing a more youthful feel.
Styling and design cues from the Capri Coupe, which Ford launched from 1969 to 1986, were added throughout the vehicle. It features a black band on the front grill and DRLs reminiscent of a quadruple headlamp setup. You can see the look of past Capri by melting the rear side window, duck tail, and rear lamp DRL.
Interior Similar to Explorer Electric
Delivers Up to 335 Horsepower
The interior, which contrasts with the retro exterior, features a configuration similar to Explorer Electric’s. It is equipped with a 14.6-inch vertical infotainment screen and a lockable storage space. Even indoors, you can see what Capri looked like in the past. In detail, you can see the modified steering wheel mounted on the RS 2600 homologation model.
Let’s explore the powertrain and basic performance of the new Capri EV. The rear-wheel drive version features a single motor that produces 282 horsepower, while the all-wheel drive version includes dual motors with a combined output of 335 horsepower. The dual-motor Capri EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds, demonstrating respectable acceleration despite its substantial curb weight.
Capri Targets the European Market
Launch in US and South Korea Undecided
Regarding the driving range, the single-motor version can travel about 627 km (390 miles), but the dual-motor version can secure a range of about 592 km (368 miles). Some people are also disappointed that the driving range was not increased in exchange for improved performance. In addition, the latest safety options and convenience features are standard.
The Ford Capri EV is produced in Germany and is expected to be launched in the European market first, but there has been no news of its launch in other countries, including the US and South Korea. There is no concrete price information yet, but it is estimated to range from $58,000 to $69,000.
