Set to compete with the Tesla Model Y
The level of electric vehicle production by Honda is…
Honda has unveiled the Ye S7, a midsize electric SUV, with official images and some specifications ahead of its launch in the Chinese market. Set to compete with the Model Y, the Ye S7 is the inaugural model in Honda’s Ye series of electric vehicles specifically tailored for China.
Honda has entered into a joint venture with China’s Dongfeng Motors to advance its electric vehicle ambitions, diving deep into electric vehicle development. As Honda is a relative newcomer to the electric vehicle market, there is significant interest in whether it will be able to compete effectively with established players like the Model Y and lower-priced electric vehicles from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD.
311 miles drive on a single charge
Chassis size similar to Model Y
Ye S7 was developed based on the W architecture developed in China for electric vehicles. The powertrain is divided into a rear-wheel drive-based single motor specification and a four-wheel drive dual motor specification. The single motor specification produces a maximum output of 268 horsepower, and the four-wheel drive model is additionally equipped with an electric motor producing 201 horsepower at the front wheels.
The driving range is not officially known, but according to Chinese industry sources, it is said to be equipped with CATL’s lithium-ion battery and can drive more than 500 km (311 miles) on a single charge. The body size is 4,750 mm (187 inches) in length, 1,930 mm (76 inches) in width, 1,625 mm (64 inches) in height, and 2,930 mm (115.4 inches) in wheelbase, making the length and height the same as the Model Y. However, the width is 10 mm (0.4 inches) wider, and the wheelbase is 40 mm (1.6 inches) longer.
Angular body design feature
Light bar applied to the front
The exterior features sharp lines and an angular design. At the front, an LED bar extends along the bonnet’s parting line, and angled, square headlamps are placed along the entire width. The DRL extends diagonally toward the top and bottom like an arrow. On the side, it features angled wheel arches and flush door handles.
At the rear, the tail lamps are applied in the same form as the front DRL. These lamps are shaped horizontally and vertically along the entire width. The tail lamp line also follows the angled body line at the rear, complementing the vehicle’s overall design. Additionally, sharp lines are featured on the tailgate and bumper, enhancing the aesthetic. At the top, a protruding rear spoiler adds both function and flair.
Interior with large display
Honda expanding electric vehicle lineup
The vehicle’s interior features a digital cluster on the dashboard and a vertical display in the center fascia. The large screen allows for a minimalist layout with very few control buttons. The top part of the display is dedicated to infotainment operations, while the bottom section controls the air conditioning system and seat settings. The center console includes two wireless charging pads, enhancing functionality and convenience.
Ye S7 is scheduled to be launched in China at the end of 2024. Honda plans to expand its lineup by introducing additional electric vehicles. It announced that it will launch 10 electric cars in China by 2027, of which 6 are known to be the Ye series. Honda aims to establish itself as a Chinese electric vehicle brand by 2035.
