Ford Announces Low-Cost Electric Vehicle Production
What Kind of Vehicles Will They Make?

Automakers worldwide have recently introduced EVs across various price points. Low-cost electric cars have gained significant popularity. They offer an affordable entry point for first-time EV buyers and serve as practical second cars for those already owning traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

American automaker Ford has also entered the spotlight with its latest electric offerings. The company recently launched an electric crossover known as the Capri and has announced plans to expand its EV lineup. Let’s delve into the details of these exciting developments.

Plans to Focus on Small Vehicles
Currently in the Early Stage

According to several international media sources, Ford recently announced plans to develop a new lineup of compact EVs to replace smaller models like the discontinued Fiesta and the soon-to-be-discontinued Focus. The company is currently working on a next-generation platform for these vehicles.

While specific details are still under wraps and the project is in the early development stages, these new models are expected to feature a mass-market electric motor positioned below the performance levels of Ford’s current electric offerings, such as the Explorer EV, Mustang Mach-E, and Capri.

Models Successful in the European Market

Ford’s most likely candidate for an electric replacement is the Fiesta. The Fiesta, a staple for Ford for 47 years and now in its 7th generation, has been a top seller, particularly in Europe. However, production ceased in 2023, and the compact hatchback Focus is also nearing the end of its production run.

Although the Puma crossover could potentially fill the gap left by these models, Ford is clearly aiming to broaden its lineup with more affordable electric options. The company’s Chief Operating Officer for the Model E division has strongly committed to this goal, stating, “We are actively discussing how to popularize affordable electric vehicles at the corporate level.” This indicates that a new EV in this segment is likely on the horizon.

Expected Production in 2026, Debuting in the US
Likely Priced Below $30,000

Ford’s first mass-market EV, built on the new platform, is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2026 or the first half of 2027, with a debut likely in the US. The specifics are still under wraps, so it remains unclear whether this vehicle will be an electric version of the Fiesta or Focus or if Ford will introduce an entirely new model. This uncertainty only adds to the anticipation.

In addition, Ford plans to launch the all-electric Puma Gen-E and a hybrid model in the second half of 2024. Given that the current Ford Puma is priced at £25,650 (around $32,592) in the UK, the new affordable EV is expected to be priced even lower, aligning with Ford’s sFord’sFord’sasFord’syric cars more accessible.
