Hyundai’s Hydrogen Supercar
N Vision 74 Concept Car
Reveals Detailed Production Plans

Hyundai had a promising model that never made it to production: the Pony Coupe. Despite having the design, molds, and assembly equipment ready, the Pony Coupe was never mass-produced due to profitability concerns.

However, Hyundai is now reviving this concept. The company has announced plans to mass-produce the N Vision 74, a modern reinterpretation of the Pony Coupe, by 2026. What sets this new model apart is that it will be launched as a hydrogen electric hybrid vehicle rather than as a traditional internal combustion engine or a standard electric vehicle. While the market has seen various supercars powered by internal combustion engines and electric motors, this will be the first supercar to use hydrogen electricity as its power source.

Design of the N Vision 74 Reinterpreting the Pony Coupe

As mentioned, Hyundai’s N Vision 74 reimagines the classic Pony Coupe with a modern twist. The new design closely mirrors the original Pony Coupe, incorporating the pixel-inspired elements seen on the Ioniq models into the headlights, taillights, grille, and bumpers. It also features larger wheels, prominent over fenders, side skirts, a rear wing, and a substantial diffuser, giving it a supercar’s classic look. The name “74” pays homage to 1974, when the original Pony Coupe was first introduced.

The interior of the N Vision 74 pays tribute to the classic design of the original Pony Coupe. It features a retro-inspired layout contrasting with modern car interiors, integrating a digital instrument panel to blend vintage and contemporary styles. Instead of a central display, the interior includes large air vents and various operational buttons on the center fascia and center console. As the design described pertains to the concept car, the final mass-produced model may differ from these initial specifications.

Over 700 Horsepower
0 to 62 mph in Just 3 Seconds

First, the unveiled concept car has 671 horsepower and is rear-wheel drive. It is equipped with an 800V rapid charging system and has a battery capacity of 62.4 kWh. It is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system to charge it, which is said to have been taken from the Nexo. The fuel cell stack is said to have an output of about 114 horsepower.

It is reported that the mass-produced model will have even higher performance, at around 775 horsepower. It is known that the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) (the time it takes to reach 62 mph from a standstill) is around 3 seconds. It has achieved the performance of an internal combustion engine supercar in a hydrogen electric hybrid vehicle. If it is mass-produced, it will become the first hydrogen supercar.

Limited to 200 Units Over 2 Years, Launching in 2026

Hyundai has outlined a detailed plan for the N Vision 74. The company intends to build a test car in the second half of 2024, followed by public road testing. The official launch is scheduled for June 2026, and 200 units will be produced over the subsequent two years. The vehicle codenamed N74, deviates from HyundaHyundai’s naming conventions.

Current partners have been provided with information for mass production, and the vehicle price is estimated to be around 500 million KRW (approximately US$365,000). With the launch of this model, Hyundai will reach the pinnacle of hydrogen vehicle technology.
