Chinese automaker Chery has officially launched its electric SUV, the ICar 03, on the global stage. Under its sub-brand Jaecoo, Chery has introduced a variant of the ICar 03, known as the J6, in several international markets, including those in Asia.
The Jaecoo J6 is based on the Aika 03, an electric SUV designed to appeal to younger consumers with its competitive pricing. The ICar 03 is priced at 109,800 yuan in China, approximately $15,300.
As Jaecoo J6 aims for significant overseas market penetration
Let’s look at its performance specifications
With the Chinese EV market increasingly saturated, companies are slashing prices to enhance market competitiveness. As a result, numerous affordable EVs are flooding the market. To stay competitive, Chinese automakers are turning their focus to international markets. In South Korea, companies like Zeekr and BYD have already registered their trademarks and are preparing to launch their vehicles.
In this context, Chery and its sub-brand, Jaecoo, are drawing attention for their overseas market strategy. The Jaecoo J6, in particular, is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the success of Chinese automakers abroad. It features a powertrain with a standard rear-wheel drive single motor, delivering a maximum output of 184 horsepower and a peak torque of 220 Nm.
With a single charge, it can travel up to 231 miles
Features a spacious body design
The dual motor specification based on all-wheel-drive generates a total output of 279 horsepower and a maximum torque of 375 Nm, accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds. The battery specification is equipped with a 65.7 kWh LFP battery for the basic model and a 69.8 kWh LFP battery for the dual motor specification, and based on the WLTP standard, they can travel 371 km (231 miles) and 364 km (226 miles), respectively.
In terms of body size, it features a boxy shape with a length of 4,406 mm (173.5 inches), a width of 1,910 mm (75.2 inches), a height of 1,715 mm (67.5 inches), and a wheelbase of 2,715 mm (106.9 inches). The design is mostly the same as the ICar 03 on which it is based. However, there is a difference in that there is a separate model with Jaecoo’s lettering attached to the front. In the case of the front, the horizontal grille is connected as one piece with the horizontal box-shaped headlamps.
The design emphasizes an off-road aesthetic
While the interior features a clean and modern feel
The Jaecoo J6 features a distinctive front grille with vertical slots set at narrow intervals and slightly protruding forward. The angular bonnet and the voluminous front design create a robust look, while the thick, protruding bumper connects to the side plastic cladding to highlight its off-road character. The bumper also includes a square air intake and grid pattern for added visual impact.
On the side, the vehicle is equipped with auto-flush door handles and side skirt cladding. At the rear, it sports boxy wheel covers and vertical tail lamps. Inside, the Jaecoo J6 boasts a horizontal layout, with most vehicle functions controlled via a 9.2-inch digital cluster and a large 15.6-inch center screen. Physical buttons are minimal, and horizontal air vents are positioned below the center screen. The Jaecoo J6 is set to launch in several Asian markets, including Thailand.
