Mahindra, the Indian automaker making waves with its SUVs
Catches the eye with its Jeep-like off-roader

Although the Indian automotive market might not yet capture widespread attention, Mahindra, one of India’s leading car manufacturers, is a notable name. This prominence largely stems from Mahindra’s historical acquisition of Ssangyong Motor.
Mahindra is also renowned for its expertise in producing rugged SUVs. The company has a long history with off-road vehicles, having manufactured the Willys MB, a predecessor of the Jeep, since 1947. Mahindra has collaborated with Ford, further cementing its reputation in the SUV segment.
Look closer at the Mahindra Thar, a standout model from this prominent SUV manufacturer.

What kind of vehicle is Mahindra Thar?
First, Mahindra’s Thar is India’s representative four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle. It debuted in 2010 and is divided into the first-generation model, produced until 2020, and the second-generation model, which has been made since then. Its sales are so high that it ranks among India’s top 10 best-selling SUVs.
The Mahindra Thar boasts impressive river-crossing and off-road capabilities, drawing comparisons to classic Jeep models. It is available in two configurations: a 7-seater and a 2-seater. Each model offers a soft top option, enhancing its versatility for various weather conditions.
Under the hood, buyers can choose between a 2.0L gasoline engine and a 2.2L diesel engine. The Thar comes with the option of a manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission, similar to those found in the Korando and Rexton models.

The 5-door model resembles a Wrangler
As it is a viral vehicle in India, it creates a lot of buzz whenever a new car is spotted. Recently, a new 5-door Thar was spotted in India. With a much longer overall length than the two-door model, this vehicle has LED tail lights, flap door handles, and a power sunroof.
The powertrain will likely consist of a 2.0L gasoline turbo engine and a 2.2L diesel engine without significant changes. It looks more familiar than the 2-door Thar and is almost identical to Jeep’s representative off-roader, the Wrangler. That’s why it is already famous overseas as a vehicle that resembles Jeep’s Wrangler.
