The new GLS is set to be unveiled next year
Expect the expanded use of the three-pointed star logo
Here’s a look at the anticipated design
Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for the second facelift of its flagship large SUV, the GLS. Launched as a third-generation model in 2019, the GLS received its first facelift last year. Mercedes-Benz plans to extend this generation’s lifespan by rolling out a second facelift in 2025.
While the first facelift focused mainly on detailed design tweaks, this upcoming update is expected to bring substantial changes, nearly akin to a full model overhaul. Test footage of prototype vehicles has surfaced, offering glimpses of the anticipated design modifications.
The tail lamp has a three-point star, and the daytime running lights are also shaped like a three-point star
When the GLS prototypes were first spotted, much of the front was covered in camouflage, obscuring details except for the shape of the headlamps and grille. Recently, Russian automotive media outlet Kolesa released a rendering based on these prototypes, giving us a sneak peek at the new GLS’s design.
One of the most noticeable changes is the shape of the daytime running lights (DRL). Instead of the previous design, the DRL now features a three-pointed star, echoing the Mercedes-Benz logo. Mercedes-Benz is incorporating this expanded use of the three-pointed star as part of its new design language. However, this shift has sparked some controversy, with mixed reactions from consumers. The new design approach is also evident in the upcoming full-change E-Class, which adds a three-pointed star graphic to the tail lamps, and in recent test vehicles of the S-Class, where a similar DRL design has been spotted.
The radiator grille has been significantly reduced, and a more sleek front design has been applied
Given Mercedes-Benz’s new design direction, the rendering of the updated GLS also features the three-pointed star DRL. While the overall shape of the headlamp housing remains similar, the sharp lines have been replaced with smoother curves. An additional horizontal DRL line now extends diagonally across the top of the headlamp.
The radiator grille has been downsized, with a narrower vertical width than the current model. A chrome trim has been added along the grille’s edge to enhance its luxurious appearance. Furthermore, a black high-gloss line wraps around the grille, creating a seamless integration with the headlamp design.
For the grille, a triangle star pattern is applied and connected with two lines of chrome garnish
The grille now features a densely packed three-pointed star pattern, with the Mercedes-Benz logo and two chrome trim lines extending above it. The bumper has been redesigned with sleeker, inward-poking side air intakes, accentuated by a black high-gloss line connecting the front horizontally.
The air intake along the bottom of the bumper has been slimmed down and rounded, creating a flowing, curved line. Inside, the air intake is decorated with both vertical and horizontal grid patterns. On the side of the vehicle, the trim around the door handles, side skirts, and side mirrors remains unchanged.
At the rear, the tail lamps now incorporate the three-pointed star, connected by a black band. The bumper has been updated with a new diffuser and additional chrome trim for a more refined look.
