As traffic accidents involving elderly drivers rise, public concern is growing. According to data from the South Korea Road Traffic Authority, the percentage of traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 65 and older has steadily increased.

In 2019, elderly drivers were responsible for 14.5% of traffic accidents. This figure rose to 15% in 2020, 15.7% in 2021, and 17.6% in 2022. In Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, a Tesla electric vehicle driven by a woman in her 60s crashed into a cafe, highlighting the ongoing issue.

Even after entering the cafe, the car didn’t stop and went all the way to the other side of the building

The cafe where the accident occurred is a two-story building with a ground-level parking lot in front of the first floor. The driver, a woman in her 60s, was attempting to park her Tesla when she suddenly accelerated and crashed into the building. The impact shattered the building’s glass windows and drove the vehicle inside, striking patrons, tables, and chairs.

Despite the initial collision, the car’s speed remained high. It continued through the cafe, broke the glass window on the opposite side, and exited the building. The vehicle then fell down a stone wall, causing extensive damage to the hood, bumper, and headlights.

Three people suffered severe injuries to their faces
It is believed that the cause was poor driving skills

Three customers who were using the cafe are being treated for severe injuries, including facial lacerations, and other victims of the accident are being treated for minor injuries. It is reported that there were no deaths, but 11 people were injured. Police investigated the female driver and found that she was not driving in a drunken situation.

The female driver in her 60s who caused the accident reportedly stated, “I was visiting a cafe to drink coffee and was trying to back up when the car went forward.” The woman allegedly did not claim that the cause of the accident was a defect in the vehicle, such as sudden unintended acceleration. Accordingly, the police are investigating the specific circumstances of the accident, believing that the cause was the 60-year-old woman’s poor driving skills.

Meanwhile, as cases of elderly drivers crashing into buildings continue to occur, public anxiety is also increasing. In April 2024, a Grandeur IG crashed into a cafe in Gwangju, South Korea. The vehicle crashed into the cafe’s glass window and the building’s inner wall before finally stopping.

At that time, eight people, including six customers, one employee, and one driver, suffered severe injuries, and 3 of them were reportedly taken to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest. As accidents involving elderly drivers rapidly increase, voices are also growing louder about the need for countermeasures. The city of Seoul, South Korea, supports drivers over 70 who surrender their driver’s licenses with a transportation card loaded with 100,000 won (about $75). Still, the actual license surrender rate is said to be around 2% due to the low level of compensation.
