Cadillac unveils mysterious convertible
Based on Escalade
Shows Hardtop Opening Mechanism
American luxury automaker Cadillac has recently broadened its lineup by introducing several new models. Among the latest additions are the CT5 and Escalade, which feature traditional internal combustion engines. Meanwhile, Cadillac is also making strides in the electric vehicle market with the launch of the Optic, Vistiq, and Escalade IQ.
One particular Cadillac model has captured significant attention online: a convertible version of the flagship Escalade SUV. At first glance, this variant may not seem notably different from its standard counterpart. However, a recently released video reveals an intriguing feature: the hardtop roof of this Escalade convertible can retract and transform the SUV into an open-top vehicle.
Implemented with 3D graphic images
Hardtop with 4-stage folding
The video showcasing the Cadillac Escalade convertible is actually a 3D graphic created by an overseas virtual rendering artist. Unfortunately, this means the vehicle is not real. Despite this, the designer has brought to life his vision of a convertible Escalade, albeit only in the virtual realm. Since its release, the video has generated a massive response from fans worldwide.
In the video, you can observe that the side windows lower, and the hardtop roof unfolds in four stages before stowing away in the rear compartment. During this process, the C pillar slightly lowers to accommodate the movement of the hardtop. The mechanism for folding the roof appears to be quite intricate.
The blend of luxury and sportiness is appealing, but sadly, we may never see it in reality
The B and D pillars have been removed in the rendering to maintain the convertible form. Although some critics argue that the roof’s folding mechanism and the overall body structure appear unrealistic, many believe the concept is feasible. The convertible’s sporty look, they say, complements Cadillac’s luxury-focused brand identity.
Despite the positive feedback, Cadillac’s likelihood of producing such a vehicle seems remote. The SUV market has become increasingly crowded, with manufacturers rapidly expanding their offerings. Moreover, specific challenges limit the production of SUV convertibles, which contributes to their rarity in the market.
Nissan and Volkswagen attempted similar projects but recorded disappointing results, leading to discontinuation
Volkswagen has already launched the T-Roc Cabriolet, and Nissan has launched the Murano Cross Cabriolet. Nissan launched the Murano Cross Cabriolet in 2011, a mid-sized SUV Murano with the second row removed and a soft top. However, due to the high price of $50,000 and lack of practicality, it recorded poor sales of 1,159 units in the first year of launch and was discontinued without a successor model.
In the process of transforming into a convertible, the side pillars and roof are removed, and there is a risk that the body of the Escalade, a large SUV, may lose its balance while driving. To prevent this, separate modifications such as reinforcing the lower part of the body must be made, which inevitably increases the heavyweight. The efficiency is reduced, and the price is bound to be expensive. Nevertheless, many people have given favorable reviews since the Escalade open car was revealed through a rendering video.
