Mahindra Thar Roxx Unveiled in India
Design Strikingly Similar to the Jeep Wrangler
Priced at One-Third of the Wrangler’s Cost
Indian automaker Mahindra has introduced the 5-door variant of its off-road SUV, the Thar Roxx, which is now available in the Indian market. This highly anticipated model starts at approximately 1,290,000 rupees (approx. US$15,365).
The Thar Roxx’s design includes round headlamps, a vertical grille, and a boxy silhouette, which has sparked comparisons to the Jeep Wrangler. While the Jeep Wrangler’s two-door Sport model costs $31,895 in the US, the Thar Roxx is half that.
The Tar Rocks generate a maximum output of 174 horsepower and come equipped with a 10.2-inch display
Currently, only the base trim MX1 has been launched, and it consists of two powertrains: gasoline and diesel. The basic model is equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder gasoline turbo engine, which produces a maximum output of 174 horsepower and a maximum torque of 38.0 kgf.m. The 2.2L diesel engine produces a maximum output of 172 horsepower and a maximum torque of 37.7 kgf.m. A 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic transmission are available.
The base MX1 trim has 18-inch steel wheels, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, six airbags, and rear AC vents. The top trim, the AX 3 L RWD model, has ADAS, including forward collision warning and prevention, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, four-wheel disc brakes, and a 10.2-inch digital cluster and infotainment display.
443 mm (17.4 inches) longer than the 3-door Thar and has a trunk capacity of up to 644 liters
The top-of-the-line AX 7 L trim adds a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped door trims, and a six-way power driver’s seat. Other features include ventilated front seats, a cooled glove box, a surround-view camera, obstacle detection, a Harman/Kardon nine-speaker system with a subwoofer, and a USB-C port.
The Thar Roxx is 4,428 mm (174.3 inches) long, 443 mm (17.4 inches) longer than the base model, the 3-door Tar. The boxy body shape maximizes interior space, significantly securing the previously insufficient trunk space. The Thar Roxx offers a trunk capacity of up to 644 liters, and the second-row seats can be folded in a 6:4 ratio.
Off-road-specific design, including round headlamps and vertical grille
The Thar Roxx’s exterior showcases distinctive design elements. At the front, it features round headlamps with C-shaped daytime running lights outlining their edges, a grille with 12 vertical slots, and a robust bumper that extends forward.
The side profile is marked by thickly cladded over-fenders, a rear step, and a diagonally sloping C-pillar, which creates a distinctive visual proportion.
At the rear, the Thar Roxx sports vertical, box-shaped tail lamps with a ㄷ-shaped graphic inside. A spare tire is mounted on the tailgate, with a handle on the left side. The rear bumper extends outward at an angle, seamlessly connecting with the side cladding, reinforcing the vehicle’s off-road credentials.
