Many were left disappointed by the news of the discontinuation of the Kia Stinger
But what’s the latest update from outside South Korea?

When we think of sedans, we often envision vehicles known for their luxury and comfort. Traditionally, sedans prioritize a smooth ride, convenience, and spacious interiors. But there’s a distinct category for those that emphasize performance: sports sedans.

When thinking of sports sedans, names like the Porsche Panamera, Audi RS7, and BMW M5 come to mind. Yet South Korea has its own contender in this category: the Kia Stinger, which debuted in 2017 and was discontinued in 2023.

From midsize vehicle level options to large vehicle level options

The Stinger was built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, setting it apart from the standard sedan. Although slightly shorter than the Kia K5, it features a typical rear-wheel-drive design with minimal front and rear overhangs, resulting in a longer wheelbase than the K7.

At launch, the Stinger was priced between $25,805 and $38,793. Even in its lower trims, the Stinger offered various options. The top-tier models came with features like a mechanical limited-slip differential. Known for its driving dynamics, the Stinger was well-regarded by enthusiasts for its comprehensive range of options and driving pleasure.

Despite expectations, sales fell short, leading to its discontinuation after six years

Despite its strong initial reception, Stinger’s sales fell short of expectations. The car sold 1,000 units in its first month, but this figure quickly dropped. By the end of 2023, Kia decided to discontinue the Stinger after six years on the market.

Recently, Kia has stirred interest with a new development. Global automotive media outlet River revealed that Kia registered a new trademark for the Stinger, complete with a new font. There were rumors in June 2023 about a potential electric Stinger under the code GT1. However, by April 2024, reports confirmed this project had been canceled.

The Stinger is making a comeback—what will it look like this time?

The shift in the electric vehicle market, coupled with growing skepticism about EVs, appears to have influenced this decision. Instead of an electric successor, any future Stinger model will likely be a hybrid, reflecting current market trends.

While the Stinger may not have achieved blockbuster sales, it earned a devoted following among driving enthusiasts. As Kia considers bringing the Stinger back, it will be interesting to see how it evolves and what new features it will offer.
