Mercedes-Benz and BYD’s Collaboration
The Denza Z9, an Electric Shooting Brake
Affordable Pricing Meets Premium Design
Denza, an electric vehicle brand born from a 2012 joint venture between China’s BYD Auto and Germany’s Mercedes-Benz Group, has just unveiled its latest model: the Z9 GT. This new offering is a shooting brake—a sporty, wagon-style vehicle that blends the design of a sports coupe with the practicality of a wagon. The Z9 GT was introduced at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2024, with the shooting brake version taking center stage before the sedan variant is revealed.
In May 2024, interior spy shots of the Z9 GT surfaced, adding to the buzz. These leaked images showcased three digital displays, including an infotainment system and a chic interior design featuring beige and brown tones. The Z9 and Z9 GT officially launched in China on August 20, 2024.
A Wagon Designed by an Audi Designer: A Vehicle with Real-Time Control
Wolfgang Egger, a former Audi designer, designed the Z9 GT. Its sleek, aerodynamic profile, including a pronounced sloping bonnet and roofline, echoes the elegance of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. The Z9 GT measures 5,180 mm (203.9 inches) in length, 1,990 mm (78.3 inches) in width, and 1,480 mm (58.3 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,125 mm (123.0 inches). These dimensions make it slightly larger than the Panamera.
This model also introduces BYD’s new Yishanfang technology, integrating three independent drivetrains and rear-wheel dual-motor independent steering. This advanced system aims to enhance handling and safety, particularly in high-speed scenarios where tire failure might occur, thanks to the XUANJI architecture that allows for real-time vehicle control.
The Z9 GT Offers Two Versions: Hybrid and Electric
0 to 62 mph in Just 3.4 Seconds
The Z9 GT is available in both a pure electric and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. The electric model features a front motor with a maximum output of 308 horsepower and dual rear motors producing up to 321 horsepower, totaling 952 horsepower. The PHEV version combines a BYD479ZQA 2.0T engine with three electric motors. The engine alone delivers 203 horsepower, while the electric motors contribute 858 horsepower.
With such impressive power, the Z9 GT can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds. Although details on battery size and range are still pending, according to CTLC standards, the vehicle offers a maximum range of 630 km (392 miles) on a single charge.
A Vehicle Equipped with a Refrigerator: Competing with Porsche in Europe
Inside, the Z9 GT boasts three drivers, rear passengers, and infotainment system monitors. The center console includes a 4-liter refrigerator capable of chilling drinks to -6 degrees Celsius (21.2 degrees Fahrenheit), enhancing convenience. Additionally, the vehicle features two 50W wireless chargers for smartphones and an advanced audio system from Devialet.
The Z9 GT PHEV model is priced between 339,800 – 419,800 yuan (47,600 – 58,850 USD). Deliveries are set to begin in September 2024, with plans to introduce the vehicle to the European market, where it will compete against rivals like the Porsche Panamera.
