The SUV model from the supercar brand that started it all: the Porsche Cayenne
recently spotted in an electric vehicle prototype
In 2019, Porsche made headlines by shifting gears from its traditional sports cars and supercars, powered by powerful internal combustion engines, to developing an electric sports car. Despite skepticism from other supercar manufacturers who dismissed the idea of electric vehicles, Porsche’s Taycan EV quickly gained traction, selling rapidly and proving the naysayers wrong.
Having turned heads and set trends in the electric supercar sector, Porsche is set to electrify another staple of its lineup: the Cayenne. The Cayenne, a large SUV that has been part of Porsche’s portfolio since 2002, will soon offer an all-electric version. A prototype of this Cayenne Electric has surfaced, aligning with Porsche’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
Revealing a much cleaner exterior
Based on the Volkswagen PPE platform
The Cayenne Electric prototype was first spotted in May and was initially speculated to be the new K1 flagship. However, it was later confirmed to be an electric variant of the Cayenne. By July, the prototype was seen with camouflaged wheel arches and lower body sections, which, while intended to obscure details, still posed a challenge for those trying to gauge the vehicle’s design.
The latest prototype reveals a cleaner, more refined look. The fourth-generation Cayenne is anticipated to be built on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric), an electric-only platform co-developed by Volkswagen and Audi. While the PPE platform also underpins the Porsche Macan and Audi’s Q6 e-tron, the Cayenne is expected to be larger and heavier.
Changes in the LiDAR sensor position
Expected to feature twin-turbo motors
Porsche introduced a facelifted version of the Cayenne in April 2024, which featured notable design changes from the previous model. For the fourth-generation Cayenne, the lidar sensor, previously located in the center of the upper grille, has been repositioned to the center of the lower grille. Also, the new model sports smaller headlights compared to its predecessor.
The specifics of the Cayenne Electric’s powertrain remain under wraps, but it’s expected to feature a twin-turbo motor similar to the Macan EV. The Macan 4 delivers 408 horsepower and 66.3 kg.m of torque, while the turbo version boosts output to 630 and 79.9 kg.m. The Cayenne Electric Turbo, expected to be introduced later, will likely come with an even more powerful engine.
The Turbo is expected to feature a larger battery
Sold alongside the facelift model
Due to its larger battery capacity, the fourth-generation Cayenne Electric Turbo is expected to be larger and heavier. This model will likely have four electric motors because it uses more power. However, in the case of the PPE platform, it is expected to be possible to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes with a fast charging of up to 270 kW.
The Cayenne Electric is anticipated to debut in late 2025 or early 2026. Despite this new addition, the facelifted Cayenne launched in April 2023 will remain on sale alongside the electric model, with its V8 engine option continuing until 2030. Porsche aims to have around 80 percent of its new vehicle sales be electrified models by 2030, with the remaining 20 percent comprising traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
