Ford has introduced its new camper van, the Nugget, aimed at the European camping market. Based on the Ford Transit Custom, a front-wheel-drive mid-sized van first revealed at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham in 2012, the Nugget is a compact version of the 8th-generation Transit.

The Nugget is powered by a 2.2L Duratorq diesel engine available in three output levels: 99, 123, and 152 horsepower, delivering torque figures of 31.61 kg.m, 35.69 kg.m, and 39.25 kg.m, respectively. This model was well-received, earning the World Van of the Year title in 2013. The camper van variant, introduced in 2019, was modified by the specialist company Westfalia in Germany.

Launching Ahead of Caravan Salon
New PHEV Engine Introduced

The second-generation Nugget, unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September 2022, has been launched ahead of the Caravan Salon 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany. This updated model features a self-folding tilt roof for easier lowering and an option to add solar panels for extra power.

A new addition to the second generation is the PHEV version, which combines a 2.5L naturally aspirated gasoline engine and an electric motor, similar to those used in the Ford Kuga, to produce a maximum of 230 horsepower. The long-wheelbase version, extending 40 cm (15.7 inches) beyond the standard Nugget, and the sporty Active trim have also been introduced. The PHEV version can travel up to 56 km (35 miles) on electric power alone.

Inside, the Nugget offers ample space with two double beds, swivel driver and passenger seats for better comfort at the campsite, and a 13-inch infotainment system. The main living area features a three-person bench with heating, USB-C ports, and audio speakers, managed via a 7-inch touchscreen for controls like heating, battery levels, and lighting.

The camper has two gas burners, an integrated sink, and a hot water boiler, providing both hot and cold water to enhance camping convenience. The interior has been redesigned to be 20% more spacious and includes a 33L drawer refrigerator. A bike rack can be added to the exterior for an additional cost.

Ford has announced plans to introduce a model with a toilet. The current Nugget is priced at approximately 73,126 euros (approx. 80,852 USD) in Germany.

The Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper is available only in diesel versions: the Camper 11 and Camper 4. Both models feature a second-row seat that folds flat and a liftable roof that converts into a sleeping space. The interior includes a 12.1-inch foldable controller and monitors, a third-row reclining bench, a 36L built-in refrigerator, and a sink.
