Tesla’s entry-level electric SUV, the Model Y, is chosen by many worldwide for its excellent performance, design, and affordable price. It even surpassed traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to become the world’s best-selling vehicle, maintaining a competitive edge at the top of the sales charts.

However, recent performance metrics for the Model Y have been less stellar. The primary issue is that the current model shows signs of aging, diminishing its competitive edge. In response, Tesla is preparing to launch several updates and new variants. Here’s what we know about the upcoming changes.

New Juniper model set to launch in 2025
Will it include a 7-seater and hatchback versions

Chinese media reports reveal that the new Model Y Juniper is set to start deliveries in the first quarter of 2025, initially as a five-seater model. While this aligns with earlier updates, the news also brings additional surprises: the roadmap now includes a seven-seater Model Y and a compact hatchback variant based on the same platform.

The delay in the delivery of Model Y’s update might not have occurred if Tesla’s plans had proceeded as initially intended. Instead, the company shifted its focus to robotaxis (self-driving taxis) in early 2024. This strategic pivot led to a significant reshuffle, impacting the timeline for Model Y’s new iterations.

7-seater with extended wheelbase expected to be popular in China and the US

Tesla has announced that the facelifted Model Y, the Juniper, will be produced in 2024 and officially released in 2025. The updated Model Y has already been spotted in regions like the U.S. and China, generating considerable anticipation.

While rumors have circulated, it’s confirmed that there will be no major changes to the Model Y’s performance or design. However, recent reports from China suggest that several derivative models will be introduced. Notably, the seven-seater version will feature a longer wheelbase to accommodate an additional row of seats. Given the popularity of long-wheelbase vehicles in the Chinese market, this extended version of the Model Y is expected to attract significant interest.

Excitement builds for a Model Y-based hatchback
All lineups may be available by 2026

The compact hatchback and the 5-seater and 7-seater long-wheelbase models are gaining attention. Tesla plans to make a compact hatchback based on the Model Y to introduce various vehicles and minimize development costs. This hatchback is expected to resemble a compact model Tesla previously planned to release.

Industry insiders reported that the hatchback based on Model Y is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2025, with customer deliveries targeted for the first half of 2026. Judging by the various rumors, a new look for Model Y will be revealed soon. Will it be able to maintain its top sales ranking with the launch of a facelift and derivative models?
