BMW Unveils New EV Plans
2-Door Coupe Version of the i4 Gran Coupe
What Does the Future Hold for BMW’s Electrification?
BMW is forging ahead with a bold plan to expand its lineup, focusing on the next-generation Neue Klasse platform. By 2028, the brand aims to roll out six new models based on this cutting-edge platform. As of now, the only confirmed vehicles set for production are the iX3 crossover and the i3 sedan, both scheduled to launch in 2026.
There is speculation that the lineup might include a touring variant of the i3 and a coupe-style SUV, the iX4. However, recent reports suggest that BMW might also introduce a new 2-door version of the i4, which currently exists only as a 4-door sedan. Let’s take a closer look at what this means.
Preparing 2-door Coupe and Convertible
Convertible Production Depends on Market Reaction
The vehicle codenamed NA2, is expected to be a two-door Gran Coupe variant of the i4. It may come in both a standard coupe version and a convertible. However, the convertible model’s production remains uncertain due to weaker demand than the coupe.
Given the declining popularity of models like the Z4, 4 Series Convertible, and 8 Series Convertible, these could be phased out in the coming years. This trend influences BMW’s cautious approach to producing an i4 convertible, as the company carefully monitors market conditions.
Expected to Begin Production in 2028
BMW’s First 2-Door Electric Coupe?
The BMW i4 coupe model is scheduled to begin production around the second half of 2028. With roughly four years remaining, this timeline could be subject to change. In the meantime, BMW’s electric coupe based on the Neue Klasse platform may be launched.
Recent sightings of a prototype, likely the Neue Klasse Coupe, suggest a two-door design with a distinctive sharp roofline. However, details about this model remain scarce, so enthusiasts will need to stay tuned for further updates.
CLAR-based vehicles are also steadily being launched
BMW is accelerating electrification
Future vehicles are expected to utilize the Neue Klasse platform, but BMW’s CLAR platform is not yet finished. The platform has been sufficiently proven and versatile enough to accommodate internal combustion engines and EVs. The iX5, iX6, and iX7 are being prepared for production based on the CLAR platform.
BMW plans to generate half of its annual sales from environmentally friendly, zero-emission vehicles by 2030. This shows BMW’s confidence in the EV market, which has recently been experiencing a slump, and makes us look forward to new cars.
