Volvo ES90 Set to Debut This Year
Early rendering reveals
the latest design from Volvo
Volvo has revised its electrification strategy, abandoning its earlier goal of becoming 100% electric by 2030. Instead, the automaker will introduce mild and plug-in hybrids alongside its electric offerings. Despite this shift, Volvo remains committed to advancing its EV lineup.
A teaser for the upcoming ES90 electric sedan, positioned to rival the S90, has been released. Although only a silhouette is available, the aerodynamic design suggests a modern update. Early renderings of the ES90 have sparked considerable anticipation.
Thor’s Hammer-Inspired Headlamps and a New Grille Design
The ES90’s exterior design draws from Volvo’s latest models, including the EX90. Notably, the front features headlamps inspired by Thor’s hammer, with vertical divisions and a thin pixel pattern that underscores the vehicle’s electric nature.
The large chrome grille with vertical slots symbolizing the existing luxury will also disappear. As the front fascia’s area is reduced, it has a more sleek appearance, and aerodynamic performance is also expected to improve. Instead of the grille, a large trapezoidal air intake has been installed in the bumper. The air intake features vertical and horizontal slots, and the bottom of the bumper is finished in black.
Updated Wheels and Tail Lamp Design
With the engine gone, the length of the bonnet seems to have become somewhat shorter compared to the S90. However, the voluminous lines on the side of the bonnet have been maintained. In the case of the side, the body proportions were emphasized by applying new wheels and horizontal character lines. The door handles have been changed to the auto flush type.
At the rear, the ES90 features thinner tail lamps while maintaining the distinctive ㄷ shape of the S90. In addition, a horizontal lamp that crosses the tailgate has been added. A horizontal reflector is applied to the upper part of the bumper to emphasize this horizontal design. Some parts of the bumper have been treated with high black gloss to enhance sophistication.
Performance and Production Details
The ES90 will be built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and will offer a battery capacity of up to 111 kWh. The CLTC standard aims for a driving range of over 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive model will achieve over 467 km (290 miles). Single-motor variants will produce 407 horsepower, while the dual-motor setup will deliver a combined 503 horsepower.
The ES90 measures 4,999 mm (196.8 inches) in length, 1,945 mm (76.6 inches) in width, 1,547 mm (60.9 inches) in height, and has a 3,205 mm (126.2 inches) wheelbase. It will be manufactured at a Chinese factory with input from China’s Geely Automobile. Volvo plans to unveil the ES90’s design later this year and begin full-scale sales in 2025.
