The history of the 212 T01, often referred to as the “Chinese G-Wagen,” dates back to the 1960s. Initially developed in the mid-1960s, the classic 212 was produced in various versions for both military and civilian applications. Its boxy body and round headlights evoke the iconic designs of renowned off-road vehicles like the Bronco, G-Wagen, and Defender.
After a 60-year hiatus, the classic 212 was revived as a second-generation model and unveiled in June 2024. The original model name, 212, has now evolved into a brand name, with the new designation T01 announced for its official launch. The price was revealed alongside the release, generating renewed interest in this revamped classic.
The classic 212 maintains its design with a boxy body and round headlights
The 212 T01’s price starts at about 139,900 yuan (approximately 20,000 USD), the mid-trim at about 159,900 yuan (approx. 23,000 USD), and the top-of-the-line trim at about 172,900 yuan (24,500 USD). First, the exterior design uses a classic round headlamp, and a split lamp is placed next to it. The bonnet is a clamshell type with a thick volume based on a boxy silhouette. Above the bonnet, a straight line with a narrow price is placed to add detail. The front bumper protrudes crudely toward the front and is connected to the side plastic cladding.
The vehicle features a floating center display and a modern interior design
The bumper and fender have a solid feel, and the door handles retain the traditional design of the classic 212. In the rear, the round tail lamps are arranged vertically, a handle is mounted on the left side of the tailgate, and a thick spare tire is mounted in the center to emphasize the unique off-road feel.
The interior exudes a practical atmosphere, with physical buttons for controlling the air conditioning and off-road system filling the center fascia. Above that are horizontal air vents and a floating 12.3-inch center display. In addition, the interior has a modern look compared to the traditional exterior design, with an electronic shift lever, a steering wheel with a D-cut bottom, and honeycomb-type patterns applied to the seats.
