Toyota’s compact electric SUV, the bZ3C, has garnered attention following its initial reveal at the 2023 Shanghai International Motor Show. Developed in collaboration with Chinese automakers BYD and FAW, this model is designed specifically for the Chinese market. The production version was unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2024.
Recently, detailed specifications of the bZ3C emerged unexpectedly. This information, which Toyota had not officially released, came to light through a leak to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), as vehicle photos and technical specifications are required for market entry.
Resembling the Prius

The bZ3C maintains a close resemblance to the prototype showcased earlier, with dimensions measuring 4,780 mm (188.2 inches) in length, 1,866 mm (73.5 inches) in width, and 1,510 mm (59.4 inches) in height. Its wheelbase extends 2,880 mm (113.4 inches). The design features include LED headlights that extend outward, reminiscent of the current Prius, alongside distinctive elements characteristic of the bZ lineup.
The prototype’s fastback silhouette remains, emphasizing its crossover SUV profile. Additional features include a split roof spoiler and hidden door handles, while the air vent on the front quarter panel has been removed. The bZ3C is powered by a single motor that generates 268 horsepower.
The decent driving range catches the eye

The bZ3C will utilize lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by BYD, although specific capacity details remain undisclosed. Based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), the estimated driving range is expected to be between 500 km (311 miles) and 600 km (372 miles) on a single charge. Customers can opt for either 18-inch or 21-inch wheels, and a lidar sensor can also be included as an option.
While images of the bZ3C’s interior have not been released, insights from an April 2024 test vehicle suggest it will feature a digital instrument panel, a large central infotainment display, and a floating center console, likely with a red-themed interior finish.

The platform for the bZ3C has yet to be confirmed, but it is anticipated to be built on the same line as the bZ3, potentially utilizing the e-TBGA platform for electric vehicles. Toyota aims to launch seven bZ (Beyond Zero) electric vehicle models globally by 2025. Should the bZ3C reach the market, it will compete directly with models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia EV6.
The Hyundai Kona Electric measures 4,355 mm (171.5 inches) in length, with a range of 311 km (193 miles) to 417 km (259 miles) on a single charge, starting around $30,000 for the base model. Meanwhile, the Kia EV6, measuring 4,695 mm (184.8 inches) in length, offers a range of 494 km (307 miles) and starts at approximately $37,400 for the most basic variant. Production of the bZ3C is set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2024 at a joint venture electric vehicle plant in Tianjin, China, with FAW.
