Ford Unveils the Ranger PHEV
Combines fuel efficiency with performance
Adds several convenience features

Ford is set to launch a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of its midsize pickup truck, the Ranger. This move comes at a time when competitors are making strides in the segment, with Kia recently introducing the Tasman midsize pickup and KG Mobility preparing to unveil the O100 electric pickup based on the Torres. As these developments unfold, Ford’s entry into the PHEV market is anticipated to energize the pickup truck landscape.

The Ranger PHEV is designed to capture the growing hybrid market, which has gained attention amid a slowdown in electric vehicle sales. This model promises to retain the robust towing capacity, payload capabilities, and off-road prowess that have characterized traditional internal combustion engine versions, all while enhancing compliance with environmental regulations.

The Ranger PHEV delivers a total output of 275 horsepower and can travel 45 km in electric mode alone

The Ranger PHEV features a 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor generating 101 horsepower. Together, they deliver a total output of 275 horsepower and a maximum torque of 70.4 kgf.m, surpassing the performance of existing gasoline and diesel variants. An 11.8kWh lithium-ion battery powers the electric motor, enabling the Ranger to operate in all-electric mode for up to 45 km (28 miles) on a single charge, which takes approximately four hours to complete. The model also benefits from regenerative braking, further optimizing fuel efficiency and range.

Ford’s Pro Power Onboard technology is integrated into the Ranger PHEV, allowing up to 6.9 kW of power output to external devices via 240V and 120V outlets—ideal for outdoor adventures.

The Ranger PHEV incorporates four-wheel drive and off-road technology, excelling even on rugged terrain

Equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ranger PHEV operates as an all-wheel drive through its e-WD system. It includes a two-speed transfer case that enables drivers to choose between high-range and low-range gearing, enhancing performance across various terrains. The high-range gear is suited for highway driving, while the low-range gear is optimized for off-road conditions requiring increased torque. A referential differential lock enhances the vehicle’s capability to navigate challenging surfaces, such as mud.

The Ranger PHEV also introduces the more rugged Stormtrak trim

The Ranger PHEV can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg (2,204 pounds) and boasts a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms (7,717 pounds). While the exterior design closely mirrors the existing Ranger—save for the battery charging port near the rear fender—Ford will also offer a limited-edition Stormtrak trim that features distinctive design modifications.

The Stormtrak will showcase 18-inch alloy wheels, a hexagonal honeycomb grille, and unique styling elements, including PHEV-specific badging and a dedicated color scheme. Additional conveniences will include matrix LED headlights, premium interior materials, a Bang & Olufsen 10-speaker audio system, a 12-inch infotainment display, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The Ranger PHEV is set to enter global markets, focusing primarily on Europe. Although a South Korean launch date has yet to be confirmed, deliveries to initial customers are anticipated to commence in the first quarter of 2025.
