A redesigned version of BMW’s flagship X5 model has been teased, with an expected release date in 2026. This upcoming iteration draws significant attention due to the major changes anticipated in its design and features. Recent spy shots of the prototype suggest it will closely resemble the Vision Neue Klasse concept, which BMW unveiled earlier.

The Neue Klasse is set to play a crucial role in BMW’s next-generation electric vehicle lineup. Even before its official debut, consumer reactions have been mixed, particularly regarding the transformation of BMW’s iconic kidney grille. Among the latest updates is a rendering of the new X5, which is generating excitement as it offers a glimpse into the brand’s future design direction.

The prototype features a vertical kidney grille
With a distinctive diagonal pattern

This rendering of the redesigned X5, published by the overseas automotive outlet CarsCoops, draws from a prototype captured in earlier spy shots. One of the first features to catch the eye is the wide headlights prominently positioned at the front. This design mirrors the silhouette seen through the camouflage of the previous prototype, suggesting a clear connection to the Neue Klasse aesthetic.

The headlamp design includes daytime running lights arranged in a unique horizontal and vertical configuration, creating a striking two-line layout. At the center, a vertical kidney grille stands out, a feature that echoes the diagonal and vertical patterns seen in the recently unveiled X3 redesign from June 2024. This design continuity highlights BMW’s commitment to a cohesive visual identity across its lineup.

Bumper with air intake placement
Latest specifications expected to be applied to the interior

The BMW logo is placed in a recessed space in the center of the bonnet. The design seems to have been inspired by the Neue Klasse. The long bonnet maintains a sense of height and extends straight, interlocking with the vertical front to create a boxy body shape. The bumper is composed of several air intakes.

First, there is a vertical air intake on the side and a trapezoidal air intake in the center, with the upper and lower parts separated. A black panel divides the area between the central air intakes. For the interior rendering, a curved display combines a 12.3-inch digital cluster with a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, reflecting the design of the new 5 Series.

CLAR platform likely to be maintained
Separate electric vehicle model to be launched

BMW’s latest interface will feature prominently in the new X5, offering a modern design emphasizing a streamlined configuration with fewer physical buttons. The new model will continue using the existing CLAR platform rather than adopting the newer Neue Klasse architecture. As a result, the traditional internal combustion engine powertrain is anticipated to remain in place while a separate electric vehicle variant will be introduced.

The lineup will likely include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric configurations, with the electric model designated as the iX5. While detailed specifications are still pending, it’sthe new X5 is expected to offer a variety of powertrain options, including both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder gasoline engines akin to those found in the latest 5 Series. A 19.4 kWh battery is anticipated for the plug-in hybrid version, allowing for an all-electric range exceeding 64 kilometers (approximately 40 miles).
