BMW is taking bold steps in the electric vehicle (EV) market, and its high-performance lineup is no exception. With attention focused on the upcoming Neue Klasse platform, the German automaker is not only preparing to launch standard electric SUVs and sedans but is also working on high-performance EVs that will join the legendary M division.

The most anticipated of these is the BMW M3 electric, tentatively named the iM3, slated for production in 2027. While details about performance and design are still under wraps, recent reports have also hinted at an all-electric version of the M4, further expanding BMW’s high-performance EV lineup. Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect.

M3’s EV set to launch in 2027
Followed by M4’s EV launch

According to BMW’s specialized media, BMW BLOG, the iM3 will be launched in 2027, and the codenamed ZA2 M4 will be launched the following year. The final vehicle name has not been confirmed, but it will certainly utilize the Neue Klasse platform. The new M4 is said to be equipped with only a purely electric powertrain.

While it’s still too early to confirm the final names for these models, it’s clear that BMW is going all-in on electrification for its M division. The new M4 EV, expected to feature a purely electric drivetrain, will likely showcase a design that blends the aggressive styling of the current M4 with more futuristic elements, setting it apart from its predecessors.

Targeting 700+ Horsepower

Performance details remain scarce, but early reports suggest that both the iM3 and iM4 could deliver impressive figures—likely upwards of 700 horsepower. These models are also expected to offer multiple output options across different grades, giving customers the option to tailor performance to their needs.

One of the iM4’s key features is its four-wheel-drive system, which is enhanced by BMW’s next-gen Heart of Joy technology. This new tech integrates the vehicle’s stability control, powertrain management, and chassis software into a unified system, promising improved handling and driving dynamics.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation
BMW’s Electric Vision: Will It Succeed?

Some BMW fans have expressed concerns that moving to electric powertrains might dilute the essence of the M division, known for its visceral, high-performance gasoline engines. However, BMW’s M division is confident that these new electric models will carry their own distinct appeal. Officials have reassured enthusiasts that the upcoming electric M cars will deliver a different kind of driving experience while staying true to the division’s core performance values.

In addition to the iM3 and iM4, BMW is reportedly developing a high-performance version of the iX3, tentatively named the iX3M, which will join the growing lineup of electric M models.

As BMW continues to electrify its lineup, all eyes are on the upcoming electric versions of the M3 and M4. With their high-output powertrains, advanced driving technologies, and signature M styling, these models represent a bold step into the future for the automaker. The question remains—will BMW’s gamble on high-performance electric vehicles pay off?
