Mazda’s flagship model CX-80
A full-fledged three-row crossover SUV
Boasts exceptional performance and premium features
As the automotive industry continues to roll out fresh models, Mazda has introduced its flagship three-row SUV, the CX-80, on October 10, 2024. Positioned to compete at the top of Mazda’s lineup, the CX-80 focuses on providing a spacious interior with a particular emphasis on rear-row comfort, making it ideal for family use.
Mazda is touting the CX-80 as Japan’s only true three-row SUV, offering a luxurious feel both inside and out. Starting at 3,943,500 yen (US$26,400), the CX-80’s pricing is competitive, while the top-tier plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is priced at 7,122,500 yen (US$47,700), making it Mazda’s priciest model to date.
Powertrain Options: Plug-in Hybrid Delivers 323 Horsepower
The CX-80 offers three powertrain options, giving buyers a range of choices depending on their performance and efficiency needs. These include a plug-in hybrid (e-SKYACTIV PHEV), a 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine (SKYACTIV-D 3.3), and an e-SKYACTIV D 3.3 variant paired with a 48V mild hybrid system.
The plug-in hybrid is the most powerful, combining a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor producing 173 horsepower. This setup delivers a total system output of 323 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, allowing the CX-80 to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.8 seconds. The diesel model, equipped with Mazda’s M-Hybrid Boost system, emphasizes efficiency and solid performance.
Designed for Size and Comfort: Spacious and Stylish
Built on Mazda’s SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which also underpins the CX-60 and CX-90, the CX-80 is designed for a smooth ride. Its double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup ensure a smooth ride.
In terms of body size, it is 4,990mm(196.5 inches) in length, 1,890mm(74.4 inches) in width, 1,710mm(67.3 inches) in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,120mm(122.8 inches). For the exterior of the CX-80, which is large overall, the Artisan Red Premium Metallic color is available for selection. The large grille and chrome garnish emphasize luxury, and the thin headlamps give it a sophisticated look.
Interior Comfort: High-Tech and Spacious Cabin
The interior offers three rows of seats and ample space as a family car model. It is designed so that passengers with a height of 170cm(5.6 feet) can also have ample space in the third row, enhancing comfort. The first row is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 12.3-inch center display. The infotainment system can be operated with a rotary dial on the center console. Vertical air ducts are placed on the sides of the dashboard.
Independent seats with console boxes were applied to the second row, increasing the sense of openness in the front and sides. In addition, hands-free lift gates, third-row air conditioning systems, and external device connections via USB C-type are freely possible. Abundant safety features are also provided. In particular, safety features such as Driver Emergency Assistance (DEA) and emergency braking are installed.
