Toyota has unveiled its latest limited-edition model, the Crown Sport Limited Matte Metal, a striking variant of the Crown crossover first launched in 2023. Dressed in a stealthy matte dark gray finish, the Crown Sport stands out with its mysterious allure. The long-roof version of the Crown crossover has been enhanced with a unique matte finish, offering a distinctive look for those seeking something bold.

Maintaining matte finishes is notoriously difficult, but Toyota has addressed this with its proprietary TM Coat. This special coating improves scratch resistance and protects against common road wear like stains and dust. According to Toyota, the TM Coat is designed to resist staining and makes the vehicle easier to clean, reducing the need for frequent hand washes.

High-Gloss Accents Add a Touch of Luxury

Toyota has contrasted the matte body with high-gloss finishes on the window frames, rocker panels, and front lower lip, creating a sleek, high-end look. Glossy gray wheels and red brake calipers further enhance the vehicle’s sporty appearance, while the interior is decked out in black leather with gold accents on the dashboard, air vents, and steering wheel.

Inside, the dashboard proudly displays the “The Limited Matte Metal” logo, signaling the car’s exclusive status. Toyota has also equipped this limited-edition model with a digital key, allowing owners to unlock the vehicle via a smartphone app—a nod to the modern tech included with the Crown Sport.

Centrally Placed Battery Maximizes EV Range

The Crown Sport Limited Matte Metal is based on the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Crown Sport. Its high-power density electric motor delivers up to 302 horsepower. The power distribution settings are optimized to utilize the motor for smooth, uninterrupted acceleration, providing a dynamic driving experience.

Toyota has positioned the large-capacity lithium-ion battery centrally at the bottom of the vehicle, much like in fully electric models. This placement maximizes interior space and ensures a practical EV driving range. On a full charge, the Crown Sport can cover 56 miles (90 km) in electric-only mode under Japanese standards. In full hybrid mode, the range extends to 749 miles (1,206 km), with a fuel efficiency of 47.7 mpg (20.3 km/L).

Standard All-Wheel Drive, No Propeller Shaft

The Crown Sport PHEV is driven as a basic all-wheel drive through Toyota’s E-Four (electric 4WD system). E-Four is a system that connects the engine to the front wheels and the electric motor to the rear wheels to drive each of the four wheels. The rear wheels have no propeller shaft, as seen in a typical all-wheel drive system.

It is equipped with an EV charging mode that can supply power stored in the battery to the outside so that it can be used conveniently, even during leisure and outdoor activities such as camping. It is also equipped with an HEV charging mode to use the vehicle as a power source in emergencies such as power outages and disasters. The price starts at about 8,200,000 yen (US$54,800) in Japan.
