Mercedes-Benz has pulled back the curtain on its redesigned CLA-Class, removing its heavy camouflage and revealing a more detailed look at the compact sedan ahead of its official unveiling. While the CLA has previously been spotted testing with heavy camouflage, this is the first time it has been seen with just camouflage film, offering a clearer glimpse of its upcoming design.
Although the CLA hasn’t been a major player in some markets, including South Korea, its significance has grown since the discontinuation of the CLS. As one of the few remaining coupe sedans in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the CLA is set to play an important role in the brand’s future. Let’s dive into what we know about the new model.
Hybrid and Electric Powertrains Keep Internal Combustion Alive
One of the prototype’s most revealing aspects is at the rear, where the fuel cap is visible, hinting that the CLA will not be fully electric. This suggests that a plug-in hybrid powertrain will likely accompany the pure electric version, keeping options open for internal combustion engines.
The new CLA is built on Mercedes-Benz’s versatile MMA (modular architecture) platform, which can support both electric and hybrid powertrains. This platform allows the brand to offer a range of power options while transitioning toward a fully electric future.
Sleek Design with Impressive Electric Range
Despite the fuel cap, the absence of visible exhaust tips hints that internal combustion engines may not be a priority for this model. The overall design closely resembles the concept CLA unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in 2023, suggesting the new model will follow a futuristic, streamlined aesthetic.
While full details haven’t been released, the pure electric version of the next-gen CLA is expected to offer a driving range of up to 466 miles (750 km) on a single charge. Inspired by the Vision EQXX concept, the interior will likely feature advanced technologies, including a dashboard screen and other cutting-edge features.
Rapid Charging and Potential Shooting Brake Model
The new CLA is also expected to include an 800V architecture, allowing rapid charging. With just 15 minutes of charging, drivers could gain up to 249 miles (400 km) of range, based on WLTP standards.
Regarding lineup expansion, the CLA is expected to remain Mercedes-Benz’s primary entry-level offering, though a shooting brake version could be on the horizon. The new CLA is scheduled for an official debut in 2025, with a global market launch, including the U.S., expected in 2026. Competing models are likely to include the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe.
