Volvo’s First Semi-Large Electric Sedan ES90
Adds Tension to the Premium Market
Anticipated Rendering Raises Expectations

Volvo is steadily expanding its lineup of all-electric vehicles. After introducing the EM90 electric minivan in China late last year, the automaker followed up with the launch of the compact EX30 electric SUV. Despite some delays in customer deliveries, the response to Volvo’s growing EV lineup has mainly been positive.

Next in line for Volvo’s global market is the flagship EX90 electric SUV. While the SUV and MPV segments already offer various EV options, there’s growing anticipation for Volvo’s entry into the sedan space, where electrified models are still limited. Reports suggest that Volvo is developing the ES90, a semi-large electric sedan. A recently released rendering only adds to the excitement surrounding the model’s potential debut.

Sleek Wheelbase Stands Out

Automotive illustration firm Avarvarii recently revealed a rendering of the upcoming Volvo ES90. Earlier reports indicated that Volvo had already produced a prototype at its Chinese factory and begun road tests, though it has not yet been publicly spotted. With only a few teaser images released, most renderings circulating are largely speculative.

However, this rendering appropriately combines Volvo’s latest design and the unique features of its electric vehicle lineup to create a realistic appearance. First, the long wheelbase stands out even when viewed from the front side. According to the industry, the ES90’s body size is 4,990 mm (196.5 inches) in length, 1,945 mm (76.6 inches) in width, 1,547 mm (60.9 inches) in height, and 3,102 mm (122.1 inches) in wheelbase. Although the length is 100 mm (3.9 inches) shorter than the S90, the wheelbase is 41 mm (1.6 inches) longer, so it is expected to secure a wider interior space.

Aerodynamic and Bold Exterior Design

The ES90 continues Volvo’s signature styling in the front, with T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights (DRLs) and a closed front fascia, typical of electric vehicles. However, it retains the elegance and presence of a traditional luxury sedan, with a subtle nod to the S90’s design cues. With its angled edges, the bonnet design gives the car a more stately, luxurious appearance, breaking away from the usual minimalist look of electric vehicles.

The rear design, as revealed in renderings from Autoevolution, highlights a sleek and sophisticated profile. The car’s “prestige distance,” which refers to the space between the front wheel and the front door, adds to its slim and upscale proportions, a design trait often found in high-end sedans and coupes. The tail lamps feature a futuristic “ㄷ” shape, adding a modern touch to the overall look.

Minimalist Interior and Advanced Electric Powertrain

The ES90 is expected to feature a minimalist, luxurious cabin, similar to Volvo’s EX30 and EX90 interiors. The longer wheelbase will translate into more legroom for second-row passengers, and the flat floor, a hallmark of electric platforms, will further enhance the sense of space. Expect the interior to emphasize refined luxury with simple, high-quality materials.

Powertrain options for the ES90 will include a single-motor rear-wheel drive version and a dual-motor all-wheel drive model. Both configurations will be equipped with a 111 kWh battery. The rear-wheel-drive model aims for a range of over 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge, while the all-wheel-drive version is expected to deliver a range of over 467 km (290 miles). The rear-wheel drive will produce 407 horsepower and 78.5 kg.m of torque, while the all-wheel drive will offer 503 horsepower and 92.8 kg.m of torque. Volvo reportedly plans to unveil the ES90 in March 2025, marking a significant step forward for the brand as it expands its electric lineup.
