A Full-Fledged Electric Vehicle Manufacturer
Xiaomi to Launch an Electric Hypercar?
Once known primarily for its consumer electronics, Xiaomi has officially entered the electric vehicle sector. Already making waves with its SU7 electric sedan, the Chinese tech giant is now targeting the performance market with a new iteration, the SU7 Ultra, designed to compete in the hypercar segment.
Rather than starting from scratch, Xiaomi has transformed its existing SU7 sedan into a track-ready hypercar. This approach is similar to Hyundai’s success in transforming its Ioniq lineup into high-performance N models. The SU7 Ultra, now nearing completion, was unveiled on October 29 and marks Xiaomi’s most ambitious step into the electric vehicle market.
Final Test Before Unveiling
Boasts 1,548 Horsepower
Xiaomi recently showcased its ambitions for high-performance electric vehicles by putting the SU7 Ultra to the test at Germany’s famed Nürburgring. The SU7 Ultra measures 5,260 mm (207.1 inches) in length, 2,064 mm (81.3 inches) in width, and 1,406 mm (55.4 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm (118.1 inches). Thanks to its rally-style body kit, the Ultra is slightly longer and wider than the standard SU7. Under the hood, Xiaomi has equipped the hypercar with an impressive powertrain that combines two V8 motors and one V6 motor, delivering a staggering 1,548 horsepower.
This powerful setup allows the SU7 Ultra to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a blistering 1.97 seconds and reach a top speed of 350 km/h (217.5 mph). It uses a CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery system integrated directly into the vehicle’s structure, providing enhanced rigidity and space optimization. The 150 kWh CATL Qilin fast-charging battery can be fully charged in under 12 minutes, further boosting its performance credentials.
Production Model Will Be Heavier
Racing Performance Yet to Be Proven
At the rear of the vehicle is a large rear spoiler and a diffuser extending beyond the body. It also has a track-specific braking system, including AP brake calipers and racing brake discs, allowing it to stop from 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 25 m (82 feet). The prototype that was first revealed weighed only 1,900 kg (4,189 pounds) thanks to its carbon fiber structure, but it is said that it will not be used in the production model because the factory price is too high.
Xiaomi had intended to test the SU7 Ultra at the Nürburgring, famous for its tough conditions, before its launch, but due to rain, it was unable to complete a lap. Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun expressed disappointment but stressed that this was just the beginning for the startup competing in the high-performance motorsports sector.
Pre-orders Already Open
The price is $112,500?
Although the SU7 Ultra prototype has been revealed, the production model won’t launch until early 2025. Pre-orders are already open on Xiaomi’s official website, and customers can also visit dealerships for more information. While the final price hasn’t been confirmed, the hypercar is expected to cost around $112,500.
Xiaomi’s foray into the hypercar market has already caught the automotive world’s attention. Even Ford CEO Jim Farley, who reportedly drove the standard SU7 for six months, praised the car’s performance. However, the big question remains: Will Xiaomi’s tech-focused brand identity and the $110,000+ price tag sway buyers into the competitive luxury car market?
