Dads’ Dream Vehicle Debuts
Toyota Land Cruiser ROX
What makes this model so popular?
At the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Toyota introduced two exciting off-road concept vehicles: the Land Cruiser ROX and the 4Runner TRD Surf. These bold concepts showcase Toyota’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of off-road design and capability.
The Land Cruiser ROX’s first concept is a rugged pickup truck crafted by Calty Design Research, Toyota’s Michigan-based design studio. Nearly every component has been re-engineered to enhance its off-road capabilities, making the Land Cruiser ROX a powerful contender for extreme terrain.
Land Cruiser ROX: A Wild Take on a Classic
With its rugged features, the Land Cruiser ROX takes off-road capability to the next level. It sports custom skeleton doors and steel bumpers, adding both style and durability. The wide fenders are designed to accommodate 18-inch billet wheels and massive off-road tires, enhancing its stance and traction on challenging terrain. While the original 2024 Land Cruiser was impressive, the ROX concept is even more striking and equipped for the outdoors.
Under the hood, the ROX retains the standard Land Cruiser’s 2.4-liter hybrid inline 4-cylinder engine, delivering a robust 326 horsepower and 64.2 kgm of torque. This powertrain provides the strength needed to easily handle diverse terrains, making the ROX a formidable off-road performer.
4Runner TRD Surf: Ocean-Inspired Adventure
The 4Runner TRD Surf concept, crafted by Toyota’s motorsports team, is based on the 2025 TRD Limited model. This semi-open, off-road SUV channels the spirit of the 1980s Hilux Surf, removing the roof and D-pillar to capture that classic, open-air vibe. A custom roof rack was explicitly added to carry surfboards and enhance its beach-ready look.
The 4Runner TRD Surf features an ocean-inspired blue color scheme, complete with a waterproof wood-style floor—a unique touch that evokes the feel of a luxury yacht. At first glance, this concept appears more like a sleek watercraft than an SUV. Beyond its aesthetics, though, it promises an impressive performance level built for rugged off-road adventures.
Toyota’s Off-Road Innovation on Display
The 4Runner TRD Surf impresses with its robust performance upgrades. Retaining the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, and 4WD system, this concept enhances off-road capability with a powerful exhaust system and long-travel suspension, enhancing handling on rough terrain.
At the 2024 SEMA Show, Toyota officially debuted both the mountain-climbing Land Cruiser ROX and the beach-cruising 4Runner TRD Surf, showcasing the brand’s commitment to versatile off-road innovation. With more details expected to roll out over time, these concepts have certainly captured the curiosity of enthusiasts and the industry alike.
