Controversial Tuned Version of BMW 1 Series
Showcases Front Nutria Grille and Various Custom Modifications
A heavily modified BMW 1 Series showcasing a unique front grille design and multiple custom elements has stirred up heated discussion in the car community. This particular 1 Series has been outfitted with a “double coffin grille”—a tuning modification known for resembling a Nutria’s front teeth due to the vertically elongated grille elements. Initially, the 1 Series featured a more typical horizontal kidney grille, but this tuning kit has given it an entirely new and somewhat divisive appearance.
The modifications aimed to emulate the aggressive look of the BMW G80 M3, the first model to feature this prominent double coffin grille. Alongside the grille, the tuner has added other exterior enhancements inspired by the M3, including a custom bumper and air intake styling.
Modifications Aimed at Emulating BMW G80 M3
Listed for sale in Tanzania for about 10.8 million Tanzanian shillings (roughly USD 4,600), this 1 Series immediately grabs attention with its oversized front grille. Filling the front end almost entirely, the grille’s proportions are a point of contention, with the M-inspired three-color grille cover attached inside. The bumper, redesigned with an angular front lip, aims to replicate the sporty, aggressive vibe of the G80 M3.
Aftermarket Wheels and Brake Calipers
On the side, vertical air intakes are placed, and the split horizontal air intakes are in harmony. The headlamp box appears equipped with the existing one, but blue LEDs have been added inside. On the side, red brake calipers and 5-spoke glossy black wheels are fitted. The wheels are also aftermarket products, and it seems to be a change to create a sporty atmosphere.
The rear has not been changed compared to the aggressive front fascia. It features the vertical rear typical of hatchbacks and the rounded shape of the existing bumper. Because the front has been changed excessively, it does not harmonize with the rear and design. In particular, the connection between the flat bonnet and the angular volume of the front looks unnatural.
“The Worst BMW I’ve Ever Seen”
Netizens Unleash Harsh Criticism
Most netizens expressed harsh criticism of the vehicle, with comments such as “It looks like a toy vehicle,” “It’s so freaking ugly,” and “I don’t understand why they put that ugly grill on it.” Some also described it as “crude” and criticized its proportions, with others stating, “The grille is too big for the size of the car” and “It shouldn’t have been released to the world.”
On the other hand, a smaller group of netizens offered more positive reactions, noting that “BMW design is terrible these days, so this looks ordinary” and “It looks like they put some effort into it.” Some acknowledged that while it wasn’t perfect, “we can see that it was tuned with love.” A few even said, “It’s not bad,” though some still criticized the grille, suggesting, “It might have been okay if it weren’t for the grille.”
