Suzuki’s iconic Jimny
Unveils new limited edition
Called the Jimny Mata
Suzuki has been producing the Jimny since 1969. This model is the world’s first mini-frame SUV. The Jimny was developed by the former three-wheeled vehicle manufacturer Hope under the name Hope Star ON360. At the time, Hope did not make it to mass production, but Suzuki acquired the blueprints from them and improved upon them, which is how Jimny was born. It later became Suzuki’s first vehicle to become a huge success on the world stage.
Since then, Jimny has continued to be loved and successful up to the 4th generation. In particular, the 4th generation Jimny was released in 2018. Nevertheless, the 3rd generation Jimny was sold until 2021, making it a precious body that received a full model change after 20 years. In July of this year, the 4th generation Jimny special edition, Jimny Horizon, was produced in a limited edition of 900 units. And now, news has come that a special limited edition has been produced again.
Global production is limited to 150 units
Embraces classic design cues
The new special limited edition model, the Suzuki Jimny Mata, will be launched in the Italian market. This model is expected to be even more scarce than the existing Horizon, as only 150 units will be produced, much less than the Horizon. It will also be the last internal combustion engine model of the current Jimny. Suzuki announced its 2030 electrification plan in 2023 and is developing a new Jimny EV.
The Mata, which contains the meaning of let’s meet again, was produced based on the concept car unveiled at the 2024 Turin Motor Show. In terms of body size, it is a mini SUV with a length of 3,645 mm (143.5 inches), a width of 1,645 mm (64.8 inches), a height of 1,725 mm (67.9 inches), and a wheelbase of 2,250 mm (88.6 inches). However, it does not look small due to its unique, solid, and sturdy design. The exterior of the Mata is finished in two shades of silver metallic and matte black.
Off-Road Ready with Modern Comforts
Under the hood, the Jimny Mata is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering 101 horsepower and 13.25 kg.m of torque. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, this powertrain offers an engaging driving experience on rugged trails and city streets. The Mata will be offered as a two-seater in Europe to comply with emissions standards, making it a compact yet capable off-roader.
The Jimny Mata is equipped with modern amenities, including a 7-inch infotainment system, Pioneer audio, a rear camera, and heated seats. It also comes standard with the latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and automatic climate control. For added durability, 15-inch alloy wheels and an aluminum underbody protection device ensure the Jimny Mata is ready for anything. A special number plate denoting the limited edition of just 150 units adds an extra touch of exclusivity.
Farewell to internal combustion?
Italian launch set for November 30
The Jimny Mata marks a significant turning point for Suzuki, as it will be the last internal combustion engine variant of the Jimny sold in the European market. With the brand’s shift toward electric and hybrid models, the Mata offers a rare opportunity to own a traditional petrol-powered Jimny before the electric future takes over. The model will be available starting November 30, 2024, and with only 150 units being produced, it’s expected to become a collector’s item for enthusiasts.
Pricing for the Jimny Mata has yet to be announced. Still, considering its special edition status, it’s likely to be priced similarly to the recently released Jimny Horizon, which retailed between $31,990 and $34,310. If you want to add this unique, off-road-ready SUV to your collection, now’s the time to act before it’s too late.
